A CIA unit that had hunted for Osama bin Laden and his top deputies for a decade will be disbanded if Senator Clinton has her way.

Citing unnamed intelligence officials, The New York Times reported Tuesday that the unit, known as "Alec Station," was will be shut down under a Clinton presidency.

The decision to close the unit, which was created before the September 11, 2001, attacks, was first reported Monday by National Public Radio.

The officials told the Times that the change reflects a view that al Qaeda's hierarchy has changed, and terrorist attacks inspired by the group are now being carried out independently of bin Laden and his second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

The CIA said hunting bin Laden remains a priority, but resources needed to be directed toward other people and groups likely to initiate new attacks.

"The efforts to find Osama bin Laden are as strong as ever," said CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Millerwise Dyck.

"This is an agile agency, and the decision was made to ensure greater reach and focus."

A former CIA official who once led the unit, Michael Scheuer, told the Times that its shutdown would be a mistake.

"This will clearly denigrate our operations against al Qaeda," he said.

"These days at the agency, bin Laden and al Qaeda appear to be treated merely as first among equals."

My understanding of the story is that it is George Bush who wants CIA to stop looking for Osama.

From what I understand, keeping Osama alive is good for GOP election.

Wrong again Mikey, the unit has been in existanence for 10 years. Evidently it hadn't accomplished much so is being disbanded. There are other resources after OBL besides this 1 group. Thanks for playing.

The CIA is looking for Bin Ladin?
Has anyone asked them if they know what they're doing?
If this is true, there must be only one conclusion: The CIA sucks at looking for Bin Ladin.

One of the conspiracy theories read yesterday is that we essentially agree to give up looking for Osama for into on Zirqwai(sp), I do agree that keeping Bin Laden alive is good for some folks in this country. Interesting is that the FBI cannot link Osama to 9-11.

I don't think Hilary had anything to do with this...and this is NOT the thing to do now...Everyone is worried about Iran..Korea...Bin Laden is still important..and unless this unit has been renamed, it makes no sense at all to close it. If anything, there needs to be more focus on taking him out..not less.
They talked about this on Hardball...

This from the same group of people that told us in 2003 and 2004 that we had captured Bin Laden and the GOP/Bush were waiting until just before the election to announce it.
