Daily Kos: Foreign students walk off the job at Hershey, claiming exploitation

this is the last time I snap into a Whatchamacallit

tudents who wound up at the Hershey's plant were living in "economic captivity," forced to pay for mandatory company housing that left them with $40 to $140 a week for 40 hours of work.
Management of the J-1 visa program is, of course, not handled by the State Department but by a non-profit called the Council for Educational Travel, U.S.A.:

Where's all the self righteousness from the usual people in here constantly accusing me of homophobia? Where'd y'all go?

If they don't like Hershey they should go home.

Nothing in title of thread suggests homophobia to me.

    You? Anybody else?

For the record, it's a poorly written article. Where exactly did this take place? You can't tell from the article and Hershey is not exactly a thriving city or hotspot... They also have factories in Mexico o it would be interesting where this is taking place...

It is poorly written, but presumably it's the US since it refers to foreign workers on a visa program.

It does mention Palmyra, which presumably is the location, but no idea where Palmyra is. (In fairness to whoever wrote the story, kos may have edited it, which I think is common practice in journalism -- or the original publishers, if not kos, may have edited the writer's piece (poorly).)

Also, it's not clear if it is truly a hershey plant, as it refers to a subcontractor, though again, it doesn't go into any detail.

Palmyra's outside of Hershey. Problem solved, Hershey states it won't hire any more foreign workers at that plant....

Hershey vendor: No more foreign students at Palmyra plant - WHTM abc27
