    Imagine for a moment....

Your dream is to play football as a QB. And you are pretty good. You play in high school, do well enough to get a scholarship, but when you get there someone else is slightly better than you. So you are asked each and every week to go to practice and watch. They don't let you throw the ball you just watch. And you are told to watch carefully to each and every play because there is an outside chance you might need to go out there and do it in a game. And you do it for four years.

Then you go the pros. But once again there is someone else who is better than you. So you are asked each and every week to go to practice and watch. They don't let you throw the ball you just watch. And you are told to watch carefully to each and every play because there is an outside chance you might need to go out there and do it in a game. And you do it for three years.

    Would you have gotten frustrated?

Do you think after awhile you might just give up? I don't mean quit the team, I mean sometimes instead learning the play, you day dream. Cause it doesn't matter you ain't gonna play you are just gonna hold clip board anyway. You think after 7 years of watching your intensity might fade?

Well, I know if it was me. My intensity would have faded. And I would have daydreamed. And when my number was called I wouldn't have been ready.

But not Matt Cassel. He had paid attention. And although he hadn't been the one taking the snaps. He was ready. And he connected to Moss. And he connected to Wes.

And that is what he brings to a game he expect to carry a clip board for. Just image what he will bring to a game he is starting.

    Nice post.

I guess we are either going to find out why he's been holding a clipboard, or why wasn't someone else holding it for him?

I hope this kind of patience and perseverence pays off for the kid. God knows he deserves it.

Don't get me wrong, I was there rooting hard for Matt on Sunday, chanting "Let's Go Matt" as he was taking the end zone snap before throwing to Randy. I hope we're all saying our mea culpas for that transgression by the postseason, because those will PALE in comparison to those coming from the fools writing off the Patriots now.

    #61 Jersey

Well, I am not tooting my own horn here, but I was never in the can Cassel camp. The only reason he was a backup in college is because the two guys ahead of him were Heisman winners. He came here and guess what, he was backing up another Heisman winner: Flutie.

It takes a real commitment to excellence to keep coming to work everyday knowing full well you are going to be number two on the dance card. It takes a large amount of personal courage and professionalism to keep up with the studies, the workouts, the occasional snap in practice, just to sit there and leave the game with a clean uniform,

It takes a professional to do all these things just to be ready "just in case".

Coach recognized that commitment, that professionalism, and the attendant skill set that Cassel has, and that is why, 4 years after being drafted, he is still around and is now starting.

I admire that young man, and will be wearing his number as soon as I can get my hands on a jersey. He exemplifies everything that Coach wants and demands on the Patriots, a team-first player, and a feetball player. You have to be tough both physically and mentally to put up with the kind of crap the press and supposed fans having been flinging his way.

Cassel deserves our respect, AND our support. He is the QB now, and if coach can have confidence in him, we ought to be able to as well.

    Respects,

Wouldn't it be funny/great if Cassel turned out to have a better year than either Leinart or C. Palmer??? Somebody could go back to USC and tell Coach Pete he started the wrong QB........

Yup, I recall that was what the fools were saying in 2001 after Brady threw 4 picks in that Miami defeat in his second start. I'm guessing if you were around then you were one of them...

    I wasn't.

Nope not true - After years of futility going into the 2001 season I was happy to get any wins we could and expected losses to mount as usual no matter who was QB so back then when he won the previous game vs Indy (it was Indy IIRC) I was impressed and didn't worry how many he would lose for the rest of the season because I knew he was going to win more that season just by how he stood tall in his second start and I wanted at least an 8-8 record as my expectations were not high coming of a 5-11 season and an 0-2 start

I guess I was pleasantly surprised like you were then eh?

Cassel is no Brady so if you expect anything near that type of season in 2001 forget it,Fairy Tale it was that year
    - If this team is going to get to the playoffs I guarantee you it will be because Maroney finally finds a way to run well consistently and the duo of Jordan and Morris have solid productive years as well and the defense plays like they are capable of

Moss and Welker will get their yards too but more like 10 yards outs on average more than 40 yard bombs like it was in 2007

Like if he is at an amusement park, Cassel is along for the ride and just needs to hold on or he will fall off and get hurt

Something tells me that the hundreds of thousands of dollars he gets paid every year have something to do with his intensity for the past few years... Hell, I'll pay real close attention to every play if they start paying me that kind of money(or even half) :D

Especially considering Tom did little standing tall to "win" his first two starts - combined he was 25/47 for 254 yds and 0 TD.. His first TD came in start 3 in week 5 when he threw 2 in Terry Glenn's last game here. Although his first INTS didn't come until week 7 when he threw 4... The db's stood tall in that first game though...place kicker and rb's weren't too shabby either...that's what it takes for backups to win early on - teamates stepping up. ;)

In week 10 that year we were neither at nor near the top of the league, rather we were a .500 team coming off a loss. Amazing that was good enough for fans watching a backup QB lead the team back then. I guess that was PS (pre spoiled)...
