question.....I looked for it online, but to no avail so was wondering if any of you knew which way to point me...or better yet knew the answer:

Say a team is down by 4 pts, and has the ball at the opponents 1 yd line (about to score a TD). However they just called a timeout, and theres only 1 second left in the game....

the play happens, and the team gets the TD, so theyre ahead by 2.....do they have to kick the Extra point? since theyre now winning and no time is left in the game?

I believe they have to run a play, whether they kick or go for 2.

Short answer is no. If they already have enough points to win then there is no need to kick the extra point.

Teams can elect not to run an untimed down, such as an extra point or fair catch kick.

I'm not sure that's true. I thought that the extra point try is required if the TD was scored during regulation but not in overtime. IIRC there was a game a few years back when the Pats played Buffalo and scored on the last play of the game ( after a controversial pass int call on Buf). The Bills left the field and Adam V. actually ran it in for his only 2 point conversion. IIRC it was required because it was at the end of regulation....

That is my recollection as well. If I recall correctly (I might not), the refs made the Pats take the field even thow the Buffalo players were sulking in the locker room. That was under Pete Carroll, and if they didn't go for 2, they would have tied the spread. Bookies were pretty pissed at that one.

Im pretty certain that a TD at the expiration of a half requires the PAT.
I think as well that rules are written that way, as the end of a half, not distinguishing first from second.

    Congrats on your post.

I looked it up in the rulebook and the language is vague. Rule 4-3-12e states "if a touchdown is made [on the last play], a Try shall be allowed (except during a sudden-death period)."

Rule 11-3-1 states "after a touchdown, a team is allowed a try."

Depends on what your definition of "is allowed" is. It may very well be "must attempt," especially considering the inclusion of the parenthetical exclusion for sudden-death trys.

I myself was not working from the rulebook on my first post, but was just remembering a game in high school our team elected to forgo a Try at the end of regulation. Obviously there are slight differences between the codes.

EDIT: I'll point out as well the rule as it appears to be interpreted is not productive, as a team can simply kneeldown on their try in order to actively forgo it, and the defense is literally not allowed to score anyways (11-3-5).

I read 'shall' language as mandatory and making it required.......but that's just me

I actually do not have a Rule 4, Section 8 in the guide I just downloaded, which is the 2006 edition. It stops at Section 3. You probably have a more recent edition.

It is interesting that the language and sections have been modified to such an extent. Usually you only hear about the competition committee changing 7-8 things each year.

I've have been curious about that in the past, but what is the big deal? Can't the team that scored just take a knee? That counts as running a play right?

    No Jersey Selected

When the Pats beat the L.A. Rams at the buzzer on a hail mary pass to win a game in 1986 I seem to remember them not kicking the extra point.

If this is the game you're thinking about, it appears that they did kick the XP...

LOL at the Vinatieri 2 pt conversion against Buffalo. That was great. What a bunch of crybabies the Bills were that day.

There must be a snap afterward in regulation. That's the short answer.
