I heard on EEI (I know, I know) on my way to work today that it has been reported (and I can't remember where), that Asante definitely WILL be franchised by the Patriots. Anyone else hear this? Who has reported it? I heard Micheal Holly say that Reiss had the cap # at 7.9mil, but I missed who reported this rumor.

    #24 Jersey

First I've heard of it. But aside from compensation issues, it's almost impossible to believe we'd let him become a UFA and stroll over the the Jets, Broncos, Chargers, etc. Even if we only get a #3 for him (and I think we'd get a LOT more), it's worth Franchising him just to control where he goes - read : NFC or crappy AFC team.

This is a no-brainer move. Whether we trade him or keep him after this remains to be seen...

IMO we could get a 2nd for him, I would hate to take a 3rd. I could possibly see a low 1st with his playoff performance, but that is probably wishful thinking. Just send him as far as possible please.

We really can't control where he goes. He would have to agree to a contract witht he team before the trade or they would never give a pick for an unsigned player.

Also, we can only trade him if he does not sign the tender, if I recall the Tebucky trade correctly. If he signs the tender, i don't think we can trade him.

Either way, we cannot control where he goes, unless he agrees.

I agree, but this was reported as if it is now a fact and all but done, which would be news indeed. Heard it just before the "big show" sometime around 1:45pm at the end of the Dale and Holly show. I missed their source, and was hoping that someone else heard it and could give us the source here.

Have a hard time believing this, the only reason I can see franchising him is to give more time to work out details... if they are not close to finalizing a contract do not see them tying up that much money. 7.79 is a lot of cash and will mess up their salary structure, what will the effect on the other 52 players??

Sure we can control it. It's a mutual option, we both have to agree. If he agrees to a contract with the Jets, we say "sorry - unless you pay a high price in draft picks". And Samuel can look elsewhere. You're right we can't just dump him anywhere without his agreement but we certainly can control where he goes (or, more accurately, where he doesn't go).

BTW, why am I now getting a member sign up for reiss' pieces?

I'm sure Man-Love-Gina has already told him what they would pay ... ManGirl has some $$$ to spend.

If you franchise him isn't the compensation 2 first rounders?

yes, if another teams signs a franchised player, it costs them 2 1st round picks.

But a team can come to terms with the Patriots (like we did with New Orleans, with the Tebucky trade, and I think we got a 2nd, 3rd and 5th or something like that).

Franchising him does seem to me the only sensible option.

I don't think either side (Pats or Asante) would want it to come down to Samuel playing out the year under the tag, but it would give the Pats a little more time to negotiate with Samuel to get him resigned, as well as the opportunity to let him shop himself around for a trade. If neither could be worked out, the Pats could always waive the tag, as the Eagles did w/ Simon a few years ago... though I doubt it would come to that.

Samuel has an excellent season this year and has turned himself into a big-name player. As one of only two solid starting CBs on the free agent market, his trade value could be pretty high. I think there are numerous teams that would readily offer a 2nd round pick as well as a market-value contract to circumvent free agency, and guarantee they get their man.

Heck, if Branch could get us a 1st, there's a shot Asante could, too. Now that would be something...

I'm 99% sure that Asante will be franchised. At the very worst, we will get significant compensation for him. We won't let him walk for nothing. Thank goodness we already have a 1st for Branch. Otherwise, we would have the Branch/Asante debate as to whom we should franchise and get a 1st. Now its possible that at the worst we will get a 1st for both.

    #61 Jersey

The question is, who out there would be willing to pay him much above what he'd get being franchised? I can't see how anyone would really believe he's worth "elite" money.

The proper question is, how much do you think Snyder will pay for him? :) (Hint: go look up how much Shawn Springs signed for {who neither then nor now was thought of as "elite"}.

With a plethora of teams with 10-20, to some with even 30 million dollars under cap, the market will be hot.

I would love to see if a team like Washington or Minnesota would throw cash at Asante and throw us a first rounder. We know how much Washington disregards firsts so maaaaaaybe they throw us one?
