Looking for some advice. I currently have a 46" sony HD tv, supports 1080i. Am looking @ replacing it. (I have no feed @ 1080, so am unable to see 1080 vs 720, which is all my current cable, comcast, broadcasts in).

I would like to get something in the 47 - 53 inch range, LCD or Plasma. Most of the current models are 720p that are in my price range. Is the pic quality @ 1080i worth $400 vs 720p?

Does anyone have a clue on this ? I'm getting close to buying my first HDTV (for this football season) and can't figure out how important 1080 resolution is over 720 for my purpose (sports, don't care about anything else).

I'll take a stab at it....True HDTV is 1080dpi, however, 1080 is either not available yet or limited (forget which one).

FYI, I've been reading this forum a lot :

    http://www.highdefforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=38&order=desc

Best I can tell there's not a noticeable difference to most people up to about 50".

I'm really stuck on size vs. resolution vs. manufacturer.

    Grrrr.

I don't know much about HDTVs, but I do work with digital video & media. I've yet to have the fortune of editing or producing anything in any HD format, so maybe I'm talking out of my rear, but my suggestion for anyone would be go with whichever will display more pixels, in this case 1080. Interlaced v. Progressive is relevant now, but sometime in the future, probably won't be, hopefully everything will be progressive.

You'll hear that 720-Progressive looks as good as 1080-Interlaced because progressive is better than interlaced, but a few things 1) Blu-Ray can fit and play 1080P, so that makes that argument moot 2) There will likely come a time when networks will air 1080P, perhaps not soon
