Over this dynasty run, I've never been less confident of a Patriot team being fielded than right now. Our team is seriously depleted and I am so disgusted in the playcalling we come up with in big games it isn't even funny. Brady doesn't have the weapons, and Brady himself has not had a great year. The OL has looked pathetic at times, and early glimpses of a dominating run game were just a big tease. I sure hope we end up winning the Super Bowl like every other fan, but I just don't expect it this year like other years.

If you want an honest answer, I had less confidence in the 2001 SB Champion team before the 15th game (Miami in Foxboro) than I do right now.

The whole problem is that some fans think that 'expecting a SB win' is now the 'norm'.

Whatever happened to just supporting the team without the need for a guaranteed SB appearance?

Personally, im just glad I follow a team that has been so consistently good in recent years and whose management must be the best in the business.

Every team has their problems, you dont think Jags fans have been pulling their hair out over the Jekyll'n'Hyde performances of their team this year??

It seems that just because we have to play them that they are suddenly an awesome team that the Patriots would be lucky just to hang with.

What you said. I'll be honest and say that I thought that a loss by less than 14 would have been creditable in the SB. I'd also say that the 31-0 to Buffalo was one of many lows in 2002 and last season had loads of low points in terms of my confidence in the team. The Pats are still a fundamentally good team this year.

Nicely said, every team in the NFL has its challenges on a yearly basis, but I am thankful for the braintrust we have leading this team... I have about the same confidence since I became a true believer right after we won the 1st superbowl.. They can still put together a good run and win the whole thing.

    2005?

    2002?

    2001?

Are you trying to tell me you had less confidence in a likely 12-4 team than two 11-5 teams or a 9-7 team?!?

The disdain for this Patriots team is bordering on RIDICULOUS.

In increasing degrees of confidence in December of each year...

    2002 season seemed weak
    2005 D seemed weak
    2006 O lacks skilled WRs
    2001 Original Brady's Lady
    2003 Back to the Future

To answer the original question,I have more confidence in this team than I did in 01,and maybe even more than last year. If they can put together a solid,mistake-free (well, virtually) string of games (2, then 3) I have confidence they can and will go pretty deep.
Will they win it all? Who knows. My respect for the Patriots is not just measured by SB rings;it's measured by the degree to which they are able to band together and overcome adversity. Last year our team wore "Hello My Name Is" tags and yet they got to the playoffs which is more than most teams in the league could say when faced with little or NO adversity, nevermind what we had going on.
This year,we've had many key losses to our team, yet once again we sit on the brink of clinching another division win and a playoff berth-again. Despite the "terrible play-calling", Brady's "lack of weapons",a "terrible OL", and the litany of other negatives expressed, somehow we're 10-4 and that's a helluva place to be.
Considering all the things "wrong" with this team, we all should be sitting here in total amazement that we are where we are rather than whining about the fact we can't dominate the league every year by being stellar in all phases of the damn game. Which brings something to mind: Next time we want to whine about our offensive difficulties and the fact we may not win the SB,let's check in on the Dolts offensive resume and where it's gotten them so far.
I have had confidence in this team for 5 years and I'm also of the opinion that adversity can either take away your fire or it can stoke it. We're a contending team and I think we always will be as long as the core of the franchise and it's philosophies remain the same. All things considered,I saw this team as successful last year and if we see a solid performance today and from here on out I will feel the same.
** I'm not ragging on you,my post really is a general one. I just think many fans lose their perspective which is somewhat understandable given the amazing runs we've had, especially 03-04. But remember that's a very tough act to follow. We're all fans. Go Pats!:rocker: :rocker:
** Here's what I'm starting to see from this team: Adversity has begun to stoke the fire when many teams would have no mas'ed it. Today's a huge game not just in terms of the division but also in terms of seeing how we play, how we adjust, and how much "fire" we bring. GO PATS!!

I have more confidence now than at the same time in 2001, 2002 and 2005.

Show me a healthy and effective Wilfork, Watson, Harrison and Maroney and let us get through this coming run injury free.

I'll show you a Superbowl winner, right here in New England.

I would not have said that in 2001 or 2005

That's not true. You are just unable to tap into your mindset in those years and you have the benefit of knowing that three of those teams won.

    1. Our team is not seriously depleted. We have more depth and better starters at many positions. I'd love to argue this against many of the years mentioned.

    2. The same team is calling plays as last year. I think we were better with Weiss, but we had the same team last year. Brady had a very limited play book in 2001.

    3. Our passing offense is 6th in the AFC according to NFL.com. This is the area we had trouble with. In other words, with one receiver getting a contract almost twice his worth and another breaching his contract, we are 6th.

We have had muchmore glaring holes in other years you mentioned.

    4. The OL is young and deep. We have better back ups than we have had at starters in the past. Maybe the weakest position is Light, who was considered the strongest. To say the UDFA's and scrap heap pickups of the past are better than the talent we have now requires Rosie colored glasses of an intense burgundy hue.

    5. You're remembering that consistent running game with the fierce Antoine Smith, who ran hard every play and showed up in incredible shape yearly?

You really need those glasses checked. If you don't think we can do some damage with our top 4 RBs, I imagine you're looking for the (figurative), reincarnation of Jim Brown and Gale Sayers.

Have some egg nog, fer crissakes.

    It is ridiculous.

Did it ever occur to some Pats fans that they won't win the SB every year?

This team doesn't deserve "fans" like them.

I root for a team that has been competitive for years, won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years, and is filled with guys that are actually a pleasure to root for. I'd love them to win every year but that's not realistic. I know one thing as a Pats fan-if they don't win it won't be because they weren't run well-it'll be more likely injuries, which is just a fact of life in the NFL.

I'm proud to be a Pats fan. I have confidence that with the core group of leaders on this team they'll always have a shot.

Yeah, right. That's the blindness and memory loss of hindsight.

Back to week 15 of the 2001 season, you likely had little hope the Pats would go anywhere. You guys like to whine about our WRs today, but you forget our 1-2-3-4-5 in 2001 were Troy Brown, David Patten, Rod Coleman, who? and who, and our TE's were Rod Rutledge and Jermaine Wiggins. You prefer that to what we have today? Pokey Smith and JR Redmond?

We are already guaranteed a better record this year than 2002. Before you complain about Mike Wright filling in for WIlfork, remember Steve martin.

Go back to Week One of 2003. We had guys predicting 0-16.

By 2004 we were all so spoiled that we cry about any loss.

This years team is one of the top ten teams ever fielded in Patriots history.
