Wall Street tax must be international: Pelosi | Reuters

"Any tax imposed on financial transactions would have to take effect internationally to keep Wall Street jobs and related business from moving overseas, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday.

"It would have to be an international rule, not just a U.S. rule," Pelosi said at a news conference. "We couldn't do it alone, we'd have to do it as an international initiative."

She is right that it they can't just do it here - but the rest of the world isn't going for her stupid tax. Either give it up, Nance, or make us less competitive yet again. Just like Cap & Tax, the rest of the world isn't going to go along with your hair brained idea. SOME will. Some won't. And those that don't guarantee you silly little plan won't work.

Last I heard it's moved along slowly. It scares me that it's getting silent traction while healthcare gets all the attention. I think it is unpopular enough that it probably doesn't pass but with the current status of the House and Sentate, anything the Dems really like could pass.

Oh, I get it. Squeaker. I see. And "tax the world," even though it's really a pretty big misstatement. I see.

(It's great that she can be criticized for being correct in understanding how a proposed law would have to be implemented in order to be effective. You can't buy that kind of spin, folks.)

I guess it's good that she gets it a little bit. The fact that her language suggests she thinks it's possible makes me think she's delusional.

I thought that about the public option in healthcare but here it is again. I think you're right . . . but never underestimate what a party can do if it has complete control.

Lots of things are possible. I don't see that as a fair criticism.

That said, this is from the article:

"It hasn't been developed to a high priority, but it has substantial currency in our caucus," Pelosi said.

So it appears that she's at least realistic about where the idea stands right now. I don't really see a valid criticism of Pelosi here other than arguing the theoretical effects of such an idea.

I mean, why even make it a thread about Pelosi as opposed to the merits of the idea? (Of course on this forum that's another rhetorical question.)

There are no merits because it can't be done world wide. Although the obamans probably think they can.

    1) Of course it can be done. It's not necessarily easy, but many things are possible. E.g., the success of the Euro. That's just one of many.

    2) If you read the article there is actually little support for it in the administration. The support appears to come from the caucus.

Nancy Pelosi is the biggest, slimiest waste of human breath that has ever walked the earth...ok, maybe a few have been worse, but not many!

I think she eats dog meat.

No it can't. A tax that every - EVERY - country agrees to ? As usual she's wasting her breath.

So a court in Russia just ruled that they could not implement the death penalty because they had previously signed an international treaty forbidding it. I think you vastly underestimate the things that happen in the international community, largely because the US has been doing its best 2nd world nation imitation for the last 30 years.

They signed a treaty, they decided to live up to it. I'm saying no way the Squeaker could get every country to agree to crap like this. Go away, Nancy.

It's not even her position to suggest such an international tax. Couple that with the fact that the world is in a global economic crisis, simply shows she know nothing about economics and how badly this would affect the world. It's like handing over the responsibilities of our household bills and checkbook to my five year old - insanity. Nancy is proving to be one of the most dumb and corrupt polititians ever.

Harry and I don't agree upon much. I'm dead serious about Pelosi...she's far more liberal than Obama and that scares the crap out of me.

Recessions are NOT a good time to implement liberal strategies. Boom times are much better. We shouldn't increase spending at all during recessions...but try telling Nancy that one.

So I take it you don't subscribe to the Keynesian school of thought?
