I thought it would be good to have a thread about guys from other teams who the Patriots may be able to acquire either via waivers, free agency(if a veteran) or trade prior to the start of the season.

I watched the Vikings first preseason game (and see a lot of Vikings regular season games) and they are exceptionally deep on the defensive line.

Jayme Mitchell had a great game against the Rams and is 6'6 285 which would make him an interesting option at DE in the Patriots system (also plays DE in the Vikings 4-3).

Fred Evans didn't do anything spectacular, but has been a nice player for the Vikings since they picked him up. He does have past character issues from his time with the Dolphins, but that's probably 3 years ago now. Evans is 6'4 305, but has spent all of his time playing DT for the Vikings. I think he could convert to end in the Patriots system and possibly be an upgrade to the bottom of the roster.

Neither of these guys are a lock to make the Vikings, and I'd probably give up a draft pick for Mitchell. This is his second year off of an ACL surgery and he seems like the type of guy who's best football is ahead of him.

I am not insinuating that either of these guys is the next Adam Seward, just that they are interesting names to keep an eye on if they become available in the next couple weeks.

Anyone else notice any players who might be on the wrong side of a roster battle, but might be able to help the Patriots?

The WR Cruz from the NYG. Seems like one of those undrafted players that is going to overachieve and have a nice little career.

Well the title of the thread says "Guy who impressed you in the preseason game".. So I'm going to take it as that and not someone who we can aquire down the road..

Here are a couple of players that stood out

    1. Sanchez - after the early pick, he looked more comfortable in the pocket and should have a better year.. Still not a top 12 QB but he looks to have added on to what he accomplished after last year

    2. S. Greene - He just punishes the tackler

    3. Stafford - he looked really good and it looks like Detriot hit with him

Who didn't stand out to me (i've watch two of his games)

    1. C. Palmer - He's lost his zip. Everything was short to interm passes..

    2. C. Henne - looked well below average against the bucs.. The BUCS..

Sanchez really didn't do much. His passes were all short checkdowns to the running backs and tight ends in the flats. Dump offs. He really didn't do anything spectacular, but it was efficient. The one time he tried to throw the ball downfield, it nearly went for six the other way.

As for my selection, I think anybody would be hard pressed not to go with Victor Cruz from the Giants. He looks REALLY good out there and, if he keeps it up, I don't see why he wouldn't have a spot in the starting line-up. He, Nicks, Steve Smith, and Manningham along with Kevin Boss would make for a pretty good receiving corps for the VaGiants.

And that my friend is the key word "efficient".. Someting he really wasn't until the end of the year..

I don't think their an elite team like most media or people but they looked really good with their young core.

Now saying that I hope they go 0-16 but I want to be objective on the OP question

Checkdown passes like that in a preseason game are going to be efficient at the very least. You have to remember (1) how bad the Giants secondary and defense as a whole was last season and (2) their defense is still trying to adjust to a new defensive coordinator. I'm not going to rule out the possibility that Sanchez could improve, because he certainly could. But he was the second worst starting QB in the league last year and, for this thread, I really wouldn't say he did anything to impress on Monday night. I could have suited up and completed some of the passes that he did.

Pretty interesting watching JPP play the other night. he didn't start but got some run early. Just as advertised, extremely raw but with tremendous size/speed/quickness. The play action pretty much took him out of the game as he bit hard every time but also had a nice outside rush for a sack. I'd say give him two years under Sgt. Coughlin and he is a top 5 sack guy.

No, we want the Jets to go 1-15. We want the RAIDERS to go 0-16.

Charlie Whitehurst looked good despite throwing an INT.Think Seattle may have a QB controversy.

I disagree 100% and from what I saw in game 1, he'll be better than he was last year. And from the topic of the thread, I liked what I saw and noticed an improvement in his play.. No matter if it was against a "weak seconday" or "defense learning a new scheme", he was better than last year..Bottom line.

This is what they used to say about Brady in 2001! Not that I'm saying he's the next Brady, but I would give credit where credit is due. He's not supposed to play like Brady, Manning, or Brees. IF he's efficient all year (and that's a huge if) and the Jets running game with Greene is good, as much as I hate to say this, I think they will have success.

I'd like the JETS to contend for the AFCE for 2 reasons, first so we can crush their hopes in December and hear the lamantations of their women and secondly so that they don't get early draft picks each round.

As to The Sanchise, due to the special circumstances I need to see more of his play before predicting his 2010 season performances.

Eh, we'll have to agree to disagree then. I wasn't that impressed with him. I need to see him throw the ball to the left without getting picked off, or throw the ball downfield with success with an actual pass rush in his face before I get impressed.

Brady was able to hit the intermediate routes into the second level of the defense with more success than Sanchez showed last year and this past Monday night, in 2001. The only time Sanchez tried that, it went for a big gain... the other way.

Sanchez was weak against a Giants #1 defense that was missing its middle linebacker, a safety and a cornerback. It was only when the second unit came in that Sanchez started looking better. I'm not sure why we should consider that impressive. Disappointing is the word that comes to mind.

Well IMHO any QB who last year was ranked at the bottom of almost every stat and the goes out sustains a drive of over 8 minutes against any calibur NFL team has moved in the right direction..

(I still have visions of Joey Harringon or Brady Quinn)

Like KontradictioN said, "we'll agree to disagree"

For Jets' Sanchez, 'One Heck of a Start' -- NFL FanHouse

Jets' Sanchez sparkles in NFL debut - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

We can agree to disagree about the importance of the Jets/Giants exhibition game, but Sanchez was being pimped about his play last exhibition season too.
