Gronk going under 4TH TIME

Maybe he really digs the anesthesia.

man, I can't wait for my next colonoscopy...you had one of those yet?..they give you this hypnotic that suspends time and space...I swear to God, they put me on the table and said "turn sideways"...so I did...then the doc said .."OK, get up off the table"..and I looked at him like "hey, wha??? when are you going to do the thing with..that thing..and everything.."..and he says.."we're already done.."...I swear my eyes were open the entire time and I never saw a thing....

I believe they gave you a drug called "versed," pronounced ver-sed.

The generic form is referred to as midazolam. It allows for procedures like the one that you described (thank God).

You're right...it pretty much suspends time and space :D

Let's hope that we all get some positive information on the Gronk-front for a change...

I feel like it's been 10 yrs since we heard anything positive and definitive.

I think we all need to remember that there isn't always a line in the sand between the chicken littles and the homers. In other words, acting worried or showing concern is also part of the human nature--as long as it's not beaten into the ground (as some posters will do).

In the case of Gronk, I'd have to say that you'd be lying if you claimed that you weren't "worried" or "concerned."

As far as "not having a problem yet," I'd have to respectfully disagree. Of course there's a problem...there's been a problem for almost 6 months now, with another surgery and recovery period scheduled in the upcoming future. In all reality, the problem hasn't subsided in the least. It has actually gotten worse, no?

I'd agree with you that we shouldn't be up all night worrying, but to say that we as fans shouldn't be concerned would be nothing more than living in a fairy tale land. I personally would have to think that everything will be okay for the future down the road, but there will be concern for the 2013 season.

No, the problem hasn't gotten worse. We are still in a waiting period for more information that will come once they go in to address the plate, according to this article. There is a laundry list of possibilities that may come of that. For some to automatically jump to one of the worst possibilities is the definition of hysteria, either that or they are a troll. Showing some concern is one thing, the blatant fear mongering that this poster is doing is quite another. The guy is like Glum from the cartoon Gulliver's Travels..."We'll never make it...we're doomed.". Nobody could stand that guy either.

There is a problem, he has an infection in his bone or around it. That can lead to a lot of complications and as you know is causing additional surgeries.

I'm not wringing my hands others have said Gronk will never be the same and some act like there is no problem such as yourself. I merely was pointing out its a joke to ridicule anyone that sees this as a problem because it certainly is one.

And obviously none of us can do anything about it, it is a forum though to discuss things we have no control over.

No that isn't merely what you are doing. You are going on how he it will take a year for him to recover, how its a pressure point time bomb, and how abnormal this all is. You aren't sitting there rationally debating possibilities but rather jumping to the worst conclusions. Its a really annoying trait that rubs people the wrong way because it is a sign of weakness.

Ludicrous - Simply Ludicrous. Before he broke his arm in game 11 Gronkowski had played in 35 games in a row over 3 years.(38 if you include the playoffs. He's only missed 9 games total over those 3 years. (4 games his rookie year and 5 games last year)

There is a clique of whining fans that sometimes embarrass me with their constant wringing of their hands at every friggin' negative story. Like the world is going to end, and the Pats are going to hell in a hand basket

And for the record the Pats could lose BOTH Gronk and Hernandez, and STILL have the best TE's in the division.

Sorry, Ken, was mocking the "Glass" crowd. Knew they would never say it about the Gronk yet any role player is fair game.

Very true, obviously things are not going perfectly with Gronk right now, he has youth on his side but this is concerning he might be fine or he might be screwed. All I'm saying is it is wrong to ridicule those that think its a problem and sweep this stuff under the rug.
That's twice in less than 2 hours that you've accused others of "sweeping this stuff under the rug." Sweeping something under the rug implies concealing something negative or refusing to discuss it in the hope that no one will discover it. Who in the hell is concealing anything here or refusing to discuss it? If anything, this matter has been over-discussed and beaten to death. No one is concealing anything. Hey, anyone can mis-use a phrase once. Twice in less than 2 hours suggests chronic mis-use due to a lack of knowledge. Find another phrase.

It is abnormal, because the norm is to get a plate and be done or get a plate and take it out and be done . Oh it isn't a pressure point? What happened against the texans in the playoffs...oh yeah he broke the bone right where the plate ended because of the fact that all the force of the landing went to that point of his bomb! Sorry multiple surgeries, infection, and muscle atrophy will take more than a couple months to be back to 100%. It isn't the "worst case scenario hysteria" that you keep going on about its actually just reality. He will play next year, but will he be the same? Who knows.

I can only laugh at the irony of this post given what has been said in this thread and many others in regards to this issue. A lot of people do want to ignore this negative story and do not want to discuss it except to mock those that think its not normal and concerning. It is very akin to sweeping something under the rug people want to not talk about it and hope it just goes away. Does "glossing over" work for you oh master of all phrases?

This 4th surgery is a non story. It needed to happen to replace the plate - REGARDLESS of whether he had an infection or not. The media will, of course, make a big deal out of it.

This surgery, to replace the plate, was always going to be necessary. Not really news.

It's absolutely hilarious that people think this will effect Gronk mentally or physically going forward.

This is old news. He was scheduled to have the surgery anyway.

This is no big deal - in fact I think it's part of a "buy 3 get the 4th surgery free" so it's kindof tough to fault him for taking advantage of that.

You sound like my wife who becomes hysterical the moment any little thing goes astray. There is no problem at this point, because the point where it is a problem hasn't come yet. There is merely the chance for a problem. There is nothing anyone can do about it right now, so wringing your hands over it is pointless.

But yes, people really want to discuss this by saying its a non-issue  good job.

Simple question: did you think that Gronk was intended to have a plate in his arm for the rest of his life? If not, then another surgery was always going to be necessary and isn't a huge deal in of itself.

From the Master of All Phrases to the Master of All Negativity, here's a phrase for you: Bugger off.

So have we all agreed that this is a non-news, nothing to see item?

Nope, but I dont think it was intended to break twice and get infected either, the fact that this is still going on about 5 months after the second break is disturbing.

From the Master of All Phrases to the Master of All Negativity, here's a phrase for you: Bugger off.

Ok then.

Ok then.

That is known information. It was known well before the 'breaking news' that he'd need a fourth surgery. Which is why 90% of us didn't care about this breaking news: because it's not really news at all. We all knew that another surgery would eventually be necessary, so who cares?

Honestly, I'm not sure if you're moving the goalposts or if you just don't understand what the people that you're trying to mock are actually saying.

I think you have a hard time distinguishing reality from your opinion. Reality is that we don't know the prognosis yet. The possibilities are that the infection is clear and he is ready for the season (best case), it requires additional surgeries and he won't be healed in time (worst case) or something in between. You seem pretty adamant that you know that it will be something close to the worst case without acknowledging the possibility for anything else, as evidenced by the bolded part of your quote above.

Everyone understands that these are the possibilities and are simply waiting to hear definitely either way. Nobody is trying to sweep anything under the rug or gloss them over. We just don't really care for the unnecessary drama.

Simple question: did you think that Gronk was intended to have a plate in his arm for the rest of his life? If not, then another surgery was always going to be necessary and isn't a huge deal in of itself.

From what the reports indicated from earlier in the calendar year, the plan was to keep the plate in his arm throughout at least the 2013 season, with the thinking that they'd re-assess and most likely remove it sometime during the offseason (late Winter/early Spring of 2014). There was no reason to keep cutting him open, which obviously increases the risk of infection and problems--not to mention that it's a pain in the *** for him.

The plate in his arm is going to be swapped out, not removed entirely. The truth of the matter is that a "4th surgery" was inevitable, but it wasn't expected for at least another year. Apparently, they feel that the plate is still very much needed either as a recovery/protection precaution, or maybe to actually still aid in healing the area.

From the Herald:

"According to a source familiar with the case, Gronkowski is going to need a fourth operation to change the plate that’s securing the broken bone in the forearm.

The plate has to be switched, no matter what, and the surrounding tissue tested. The real question is if Gronkowski, who has been taking part in the team’s offseason program, will need a fifth operation.

If tests show the infection has been completely flushed out, the plate will be replaced, and the recovery process begins. If there are still signs of infection, that won’t happen.
"

I do agree with you that this news shouldn't be looked at as the end of the world scenario either, so we're definitely in agreement there. I also think that BSR's last post was extremely spot-on and very well written also. There's no need to beat a dead horse with worry, although at the same time I do think that it's pretty normal to show some level of concern.

I guess it's been asked but I'm gonna do it again...what happened to just putting a cast on the arm and letting the bone heal on its own? I broke my forearm when I was a teen and had a cast for 8 weeks....good as new when they took it off. Why all these rods and screws and forays into bacteria banks like all hospitals are? Seems as if it's a case of "who's the better specialist?" at work here. What next, kevlar skull implants to ward off concussions?

I think they they used the plate to bring him back for the playoffs and sooner than they would be able to bring him back otherwise. Had they just set it and put it in a cast it he would probably have missed the playoffs, but he would be fine now. They rolled the dice and lost.
