    Hi everyone!

Singaporepatsfan here, long-time reader, first-time poster. Hope everyone is having a great time at the end of the year.

I just wanted to know how glad I am that the Pats are in the play-offs. Even though it was highly improbable that they miss out this year, visions of 2003 and the last game of the season kept dancing in my head, especially after the loss to Miami.

I also wanted to let you know how lucky you guys are in being able to follow the greatest team on earth over in the US. When I came back to Singapore, I found that the cable company here cancelled the NFL package and the only game I can catch is MNF on ESPN, not the easiest thing since it's shown at 9am in the morning here. As for the Sunday games, I usually have to follow them on gamecast at 2am on Mondays, reading the plays and letting my imagination work.

As for the playoff opponents, we really need to play Denver so we can just beat them and get the monkey off our backs. IMHO, Indy is a little more relaxed about playing the pats because they have beaten them twice in a row and they can forget about the previous string of defeats. If we kick the crap out of Denver, future games against the broncos will come a lot easier.

    cheers

Nice post. Sometimes I fell "underprivileged" trying to follow the Pats from California, and get upset with people back East complaining about some particular announcers doing a game when I just wish I could watch it. But, Singapore, wow. Hang in there.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

I am Singaporean and I was an undergrad in Boston from 2002 to 2006. My roommate introduced me to Football when he found out that I have not been enlightened yet. He was a Raiders fan, so as a way of thanking him, I bought the DVD of the Pat's first Superbowl season and watched the snowbowl game together. I've never seen a guy curse so much in my life. Also, tt was rather amusing to find that Baseball is deemed to be the national game in America and not Football. The latter is so much more exciting and more people seem to follow football across the nation.

I am quite chuffed to know that the Pats are going to be in Beijing and if I can get leave from the army, I'm heading over there to watch the game! It's a 2700 mile trip but I think it's worth it! There are pros and cons to playing in China I think. American football badly needs to be marketed around the world so that people become aware of what a great game this is. People around here have no idea what it is and all they have as a guide to the game are movie (the waterboy and the longest yard... oh dear ) and rumours (a typical saying: soccer is a gentleman's game played by beasts, rugby is a beastly game played by gentlemen and football is a beastly game played by beasts.) We do see some manning ads from time to time but people have no idea who he is and keep asking me who the man with that huge neck is.

So this game in China will really open things up and get some much needed publicity here. I for one really need it. I brought a football back with me but I have no one to throw it to. It seems like an abuse of my authority to make my platoon learn how to play football. At least my girlfriend (bless her heart) has been game enough to learn how to catch and her throw is getting better too. (her favourite players are Brady, Dillon and Caldwell because she was born on 12.28.87... oh well, I can never understand women... She might be leaning away from Caldwell because she finds his eyes freaky)

I do have some concerns in that they players just might come down with some nasty bug and not be able to play well back in the states. Heck, given how seriously injured our players get, it seems like tempting fate to start playing on chinese field somewhere. And traveling around the world just isn't a great idea for a team. Jet lag, etc and who knows what else? And it's not like air travel is that safe these days.

BTW, any tips on how I can catch a game live would be appreciated. Right now, I get some of the highlights on NFL.com (thank goodness they don't show those Watson fumbles) but that's pretty much about it. From what I know the playoffs will not be on ESPN so i won't be able watch it. I wish they were so at least I can watch them, even if they leave Madden alone in the box to mumble incoherently for the entire game.

    Cheers!

I don't know about live, but Mike the Brit was using a DVD service before he invaded Cambridge, wish I could remember what is was, perhaps he'll sober up tomorrow and post here for you. I'm glad you clarified you had a platoon, I was wondering why the Army was chasing you. :D I assume you're a Lieutenant? Watch out for Harrison37, he outranks you a bit, but a nice guy nonetheless. Welcome aboard LT!

Thanks! I hope I can get something from Mike the Brit. Still, I suppose I can just get the DVD for this Superbowl season. Watching it would be awesome since I would not have seen most of the footage!
As for the army thing, I should clarify that I HAD a platoon. The army decided that they are short of paper pushers so I have just been transferred to a desk-bound job. All this time I spent cursing at REMFs and now I am one myself. That's why I can finally spare the time at work to register and post to this forum especially since I had to trade my rifle for a bloody computer.

Ha! Nothing like a little staff work, are you in line for any flag aid positions? They must figure your getting too old for field work! :D

Nah, if they try to push me into any flag aid jobs, I am going to fight it. Nothing worse than being a coffee boy for the generals.

On a side note, one of the most pleasing things I encountered back in Singapore was that the Patriots are probably the most famous team over here, in spite of the lack of coverage. 3 Superbowls are hard to ignore and they HAVE to report it. The only other team that people might have heard of are the niners. what's even sweeter? nobody has ever heard of the Colts. People go, "Colts? Are they good?" and I would shake my head sadly and say no.

Colts, you should tell them they're great bar-b-qed. C'mon, the flag LT directs the enlisted folks to make the coffee, then they take the Admiral a fresh cup with his mail and morning reports. Now you probably get to write his morning reports - boring!

    Oh man,

I wish you hadn't brought up the coffee thing. Now all I can think about is Manning yelling D-Caf. It's rather sad that we probably won't be running into them this year in the playoffs. I wish I can show my friends the Pats- Dolts game and say " see? that's the natural order of things. The sun rises in the east, Manning chokes in playoff games and the Pats own the Colts."

Here's the thing though. Since I have been showing my friends the DVDs of the Pats, most of them are under the impression that each game is a fast and furious 1 hour. I have not made anyone sit through a live game for 3 hours with commercials between every play. That just might turn them off from the game.

    Welcome to the board Singaporepatsfan,

Have you tried signing up for NFL Game Pass from Yahoo, it allows you to see all the games you want on your computer, it is a little pricey but worth it. It is probably to late for this season but maybe you could try it next year.

    Here is a link: http://sports.yahoo.com/nflgamepass

Selv tak(do you speak Danish?) I think maybe they are going to offer the playoffs, but you will have to pay for an extra package, maybe $50 for all the games, I am sure they will announce the price soon.

I am lucky because here in Denmark they show all the playoff games and the Super Bowl live, but if the Pats make the Super Bowl I will be in Miami.

Thats a great story,SPF! Some of the local radio staions must broadcast games on the net,if thats any good, and I'm sure you can get something on Serius satelite, though it might cost a few bucks....

I don't live in Asia but travel there frequently and, as far as I know, Satellite is the best and only way to get more than the rare NFL game. If you're really homesick you can use it to tune in to NewsCenter 5 before you go to work in the morning...
