mangini has his issues but his drafting hasnt been all that bad with jets other than maybe gholston. in fact ryan is playing with quite a few his core players in harris/revis/mangold/

Great piece, very interesting. One thing though. It mentions this:

Though he did not select him, Mangini called Woodhead's house during the last round.

"We won't be able to get you, but we want you," Mangini said.

    "I'm coming," Woodhead said.

That implies Mangini called him during the draft. Is that even allowed if you don't own the rights to the guy? For all you know, he could get drafted in the next few picks.

It's totally routine, especially to call priority UDFA targets during round 7. You can't tamper with a guy who isn't anybody else's property.

Belichick, make sure you let Woodhead know that the jets didn't want him, didn't think he was good enough, or talented enough, didn't think he could get the job done.

He was a failure in their eyes....not good enough....

Also I hope that Woodhead can give BB some valuable reports on the Jets although it only be on the Jets offense.

Being the Anti-Felger I suspect that the Patriots will shutdown the Jets offense. The problem will be scoring against the Jets.

To the person who said that Woodhead was bad at picking up blitzes, please get this following quote tattooed to the inside of your eyelids:

True, but there's a chance he could be by the end of the round. What if Woody got drafted with the last pick or something?

I know there are rules and then there's the reality of how things work, but I'm just curious if this is technically considered legal or not?

Teams call players all the time during the draft. In fact, the Jets were on the phone with Matt Light when the Pats called to tell Light that they were selecting him.

    It's actually SOP.

If Woody got drafted, then that team would own his rights. It doesn't change anything.

As long as no official contract was offered, it doesn't matter.

I think it went beyond that, seeing as the Patriots actually originally had pick #50, and the JEST #49.

When BB called, Light said that he was on the phone with the JEST. IIRC, BB said something like "keep an eye on your TV," and about a minute later, Light saw that the Pats had traded up to select him. :)

I love this kid. One of the best pleasant surprises in a season filled with pleasant surprises. He carries his nuts around in a wheel barrel.

That may be. All I remember is that I had Light down as a 2nd round pick for the Pats before that Draft. He's been an excellent player for the Pats and he picked up from where Bruce Armstrong left off.

Now, I can only hope that the Pats have a LT after this season who can continue the trend of excellence that the Pats have had at that position for the past 20 years or so..

As for Woodhead, this kid is simply dynamite. Like Welker, he reminds me of Wayne Chrebet. Heart of a Warrior. Never say die attitude. Always striving to be better. They are rare players. The fact that the Pats have TWO of them on the team at the same time is amazing.
