Graphene Will Change The Way We Live | Dr. Kaku's Universe | Big Think

Just yesterday, two scientists; Konstantin Novoselow and Andre Geim, were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in physics for their pioneering work on the discovery of graphene.

Researchers at Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering; who proved that graphene is the strongest material ever measured stated that "It would take an elephant, balanced on a pencil, to break through a sheet of graphene the thickness of Saran Wrap."

    how cool is this?

Okay on the plus side, what do we think the GT-500 goes zero to sixty in now?

On the minus side, I'm sick and tired of things changing the way we live dabnabbit. What with the innertubes and the segways and the e-mailings and the iRaq and iRan or whatever the hell apple keeps selling us we're all so wired already we can't even watch an inning of baseball without getting bored. Wait that's always been true. Point is now there's always something else to do...

I don't know what's wrong with a good old-fashioned dirty-coal fired steam locomotive and a six-shooter, that's technology if you ask me. This crap is just cluttering up our lives with more improvement from eggheads on the coasts that bathe.

Think of the applications for mass transportation, from a safety point of view and a MPG as vehicles will be a whole lot lighter...

Can it be made into a clear bubble so no one will have to touch anyone else?

Seriously, this is very interesting. What about airliners and space travel? Is the Enterprise made out of this stuff? How did Gene Roddenberry know this was going to be invented?

    Wow!

More importantly, this means lighter and stronger helmets and shoulder pads!

Graphene sounds nice, but what about that pencil?

Strong enough to support an elephant, able to pierce graphene, plus it's a pencil!
