Everyone always says they support immigration if it's done legally.

Well, here's what happens when immigrants come here legally, follow all the rules, and apply for citizenship. Don't we owe these people better?

If the government is free to ignore the law, how can it ask others to follow it?

The government has been ignoring the laws against illegal immigration for decades. How come you don't complain about that too? :p

That's your fight to fight, not mine. If the government doesn't follow its own laws, it can't reasonable expect people to follow all the law. Lead by example...

It's been going on for years I sure do wish Wonderful Hillary, Our Bill and all their gang had got the ball rolling on this situation, maybe Aunt Nancy & Weasel Reid can start working on it, Bush is busy keeping Nukes out of our Malls.

Yeah, I think I saw Bush outside my local mall with a hand-held nuke detector. He's much too busy to make sure the government follows its own laws. 120 days means 120 days, not 2 years.

Do you have a link to the story? I'm asking this because I think there's more to the story than what you've posted. I believe the immigrants being delayed due to the "FBI name check" are Muslim and the scrutiny is part of a terror watchlist effort. I'm not saying such a procedure is right or wrong, but the blurb you quoted makes no mention of this. I saw such a story on the news the other night and wonder if this article relates to that story.

    Regards,
    Chris

This is how I figure your post was constructed.

The story is an ACLU press release, so I can give you the link (http://aclu.org/immigrants/gen/28284prs20070208.html) but remember that the ACLU is the plaintiffs' counsel here, so it may still not be the whole story.

What I do know is that the waiting list for an N-400 application (application for citizenship) is 18 months. That's just to get the application, and you can't begin the process until you're eligible for citizenship (have lived here 5 years in most cases, less if married to a citizen). This isn't just for people from Muslim countries (the only reason I even know about the application delay is we have friends from Ukraine who immigrated in 2001)

Yup, same story. CAIR is working with the ACLU on the case.

you see I never got out of grammar school, I spent six years in the eighth grade, I got married shortly after the last time I got kept back and quit before they could keep me back again.

I just printed out your post and will study it.

The INS and it inefficency has been a nightmare for 50 years. This isn't a Bush/Clinton issue. Thisis a bureauracy issue.

No doubt about that, it's been bad for a long time and I don't think it would be fair to blame any administration for it. I don't think it's anything intentional, either, I doubt the INS is out to deny immigrants their rights, the INS is just just backlogged, underfunded, and staffed with government boobs.

Unrelated to the immigrant issue, there's no reason why people should have to wait years to have courts hear their cases either. The more the government tries to do, the worse it does all those things. We're going to have to get back to the basics pretty soon on government services or everything will work like this. Hence nationalized healthcare makes me cringe.

I bet if you paid them $100 per application processed they could get the backlog caught up in 2 weeks.

My mom was an immigrant as is my wife and both my children so we have a lot of experience dealing with INS. I agree that the gov taking over the 15%+ that healthcare would represent would be a nightmare.
