One of the most bizarre stories in a while coming out of South Carolina, Sanford takes off last Thursday and becomes basically incommunicado.. now the story is he wanted to be alone and was hiking the Appalachian trail..

This story is so full of holes.... if he was on the AT, shouldn't he have told someone in case of state or family emergency??? If he is on the AT, why carry a laptop... excess weight?? Didn't anyone notice he was preparing and packing for his hike?? Bizarro mondo...

What's so strange about wanting to get away from it all for a while? I am not sure your narrative is correct, that he went missing.

There's a great work of art extolling the melancholy mood, the typical poetic humor.

    Il Penseroso by John Milton

    HENCE vain deluding joyes,
The brood of folly without father bred,
    How little you bested,
    Or fill the fixèd mind with all your toyes;
    Dwell in some idle brain,
And fancies fond with gaudy shapes possess,
    As thick and numberless
As the gay motes that poeple the Sun Beams,
    Or likest hovering dreams
The fickle Pensioners of Morpheus train.
But hail thou Goddess, sage and holy,
    Hail divinest Melancholy,
Whose Saintly visage is too bright
    To hit the Sense of human sight;

Much as I like this, and much as I agree that our friend Sen. Sanford should quote Milton in his first press conference on the subject of his frequent jaunts, it's starting to look as if a passage or two from Paradise Lost may be more apropos by that time.

Now as to what's so wrong with wanting to get away from it all: I can't leave without telling the boss or the wife, and without squaring away the things I am responsible for. That is to say, without making the appropriate arrangements. Neither can our poor no-doubt Milton-reading Sen. Sanford.

You think you'll be gone for a few days? Let your staff know how to reach you, or transfer power. Don't leave a leadership vacuum. Better still, forego this little personal quirk while in office. Man up and accept that some fairly heavy responsibility is part of the job. There are 100 U.S. Senators at any given time. There is only one, in recent memory, who has decided he needs neither to transfer power when he goes on vacation, nor tell his own staff or family where he went.

    Worth thinking about, nu?

Actually, Il Penseroso is not from Paradise Lost. He wrote this and L'Allegro when he was in his twenties.

    Do you [like] literature, too?

Love ya, brother from another mother.

It gets deeper and deeper.. now he says he was in Argentina.. not only out of the state, but out of the country.. interesting that this was not picked up by some type of federal data base as he had to use a passport.. or is there another explanation???

    This is getting too weird.

But I'm reminded a US Senator caused the loss of a girl's life in circumstances murky.

Mary Jo Koepchne, who was never found alive and whose last minutes were in terror, clawing desperately at the car's upholstery as she slowly used up her oxygen, should have been the political death of Ted Kennedy.

In a just world he would have gone to the slammer for any number of years. It's easy to get preachy when the shoes are on the other foot.

As far as I know, the prudence can be question; there was no loss of life by the SC governor. Any harm is self-inflicted.

When Kennedy did is inexcusable.. he should have been prosecuted and been removed from office, some things can never be forgiven. Some people look at all the good he did, but that will never make up for his drunken behavior that led to loss of Mary Jo Kopechne's life.

OTOH this is just a thread hijack.. it was about Sanford..

Of course. He's the first to do it to threads he doesn't like. And the first to complain when it happens in a thread he does like.

    Ah, the hijack technique!

So what, Mark Sanford didn't happen, because if it were a Democrat, the Dem-backers would say what you're saying about your lil buddy in SC? Same with Larry Craig, I imagine, and Jim Bakker, and the rest of the Grand Orgy Party?

The reason this is so much fun is precisely because the ayatollahs decided that getting a hummer was grounds for impeachment (not to mention the usual Grand Orgy Party reaction to any Dem who has or has ever had extramarital sex.)

Guess what? It's this guy's own business. It was Clinton's own business. Sanford should have straightened out his transfer of power prior to leaving the damn country, and he probably shouldn't be using state police cruisers to chase tail in general. He's screwing up big time. But in terms of his marriage? That's his own business.

But ONLY if it's Clinton's own business, or if it's gay guys' and womens' own business what they do with their private parts.

It's the hypocrisy, stupid. I never saw Clinton trying to tell America that he alone knows what marriage "really" means, like the Grand Orgy Party-- and its blue-dog lap-dogs -- do.
