Paying Vinitieri in his prime was never an issue. Belichick paid him well, and even paid him as a franchisee.
When AV CHOSE to move on, IMHO, the patriots got the better deal. Gostkowski had been a better kicker, and more complete kicker, since then.
I expect that the patriots will again offer to make our kicker one of the top 3 paid kickers in the NFL, and will franchise him if a deal cannot be made. I expect that Gost will be making $4M a year, whether he is extended or franchised.
