Italy have yet to play a really good team. They didn't excel against Australia or (despite the scoreline) the Ukraine. But they did enough. Germany should be slight favourites, given that they knocked out Argentina (not by much, admittedly ...) and have the twelfth man on their side (no, I don't mean the referee  ).

I make France strong favourites against Portugal -- not just because I have hated the way that Portugal play the game. They were poor against England while France, after a very slow start, were excellent against Brazil.

Italy, as you mentioned correctly, arrived at semi-finals without playing with a very good team (but in our first round 'on the paper' it was hard as we were with Czech and Ghana - so not so easy).

Germany historically (see 1970 and 1982) 'suffer' us a lot...

it will be necessary a top and well playied game for us to beat, in Germany..., the 'owner of the house'.

still i think that Italy has the possibility to win that game.

Portugal-France ?. PT recovers Deco and Costinha if i'm not wrong - so: a difficult task also for France...

Right about both -- not to mention that Italy absolutely thrashed Germany in the warm-ups to the WC. So I only have a slight feeling for Germany over Italy and wouldn't be surprised if it went the other way.

Maybe it's my emotion in relation to Portugal (how could you not hate them after the Holland game?) but I think it will take more than Deco and Costinha to turn them into a rival to France -- if France continue to play as they have just started to.

The winner of the World Cup will come from the Germany/Italy game. I do not believe either Portugal or France will be good enough to beat the winner of that game.
Personally I hope, and believe, it will be Italy. Because of what is happening back home, with the 'cheating' inquiry, and the sad situation concerning Gianluca Pessotto, I think there is a mental toughness about them and a real togetherness. But,what a game! To beat the Germans on home soil. Game of the tournament, no doubt.

Wow. Congrats to the Azzuri! They thoroughly deserved that, from what I saw.

What a game! Magnificent performance from the Azzurri. Finest football game I have seen in a while. Again, Cannavaro (player of the tournament)Zambrotto, Gattuso and Pirlo outstanding. The two goals were taken superbly.
Germans played their part. Dangerous on the break. Ballack started well but faded. Thought it would go to pens. And did I mention Pirlo?
Going on holiday on Saturday to Majorca. Will be watching the final on Sunday night in a hotel with a few beers. Hope that the Azzurri will be playing Les Bleus. Not keen on Portugal at all. And did I mention Pirlo?

    Italia deserved it...

I hope AC Milan get relegated so Gattuso can sign with United. There's little chance, however, of Cannavaro (MotM against Deutschland) leaving Juventus I feel.

Odonker for the Germans, his price has skyrocketed after this WC.

Was out this evening so could only see the highlights -- but what highlights! Congratulations to Italy -- they came through when they needed to in a fantastic match. I'm very happy for you, IPTP.

I hope that anyone caught bribing or cheating will be severely dealt with. But I do not wish for the ruination of Europe's finest league by relegating teams such as Milan, Juve and others.
Which United, Newcastle, DC, Sheffield, Manchester, Dundee etc? Personally, I hope it is for the Geordies!!

Buffon has, allegedly, asked for a transfer if Juve are relegated. I don't think he will be the only one.

Mmm. Not sure about him. But for sure Klose, Podolski and Lahm.

    I know a windup when I see one. Roy Keane's United. :D

Klose and Podolski were MIA against Italy, even though they didn't get much help from Ballack or Schweinsteiger.

Odonkor on the other hand, excelled in every game he came on in. The real question for him is whether he can do it for 90 mins, or is he only a super sub.

    Just started.

I haven't seen anything very exciting yet, except that Barthez didn't keep hold of a shot and pushed it to where a forward might easily have got it (is this familiar, Gomez, Seymour?) and Ronaldo did about six step-overs in a row.

    Edit (75 minutes):

A well deserved lead for France -- clear pen from Carvalho. Portugal diving like Greg Louganis -- no bookings. Barthez lucky to get away with amazingly inept fumble (is this the best goalkeeper in France? I can't believe it for a second.)

    Edit 2 (94 minutes):

So France win. But it wasn't an impressive game (I seem to have missed all the good games of the tournament). The Portuguese have tried to bully and con the referees all the way through and I'm delighted that they've been beaten at last. Zidane looked detached, Henry was listless, Viera pretty much invisible. I'm happy but at this stage Italy are the favourites.
