I've really been enjoying the World Cup.

I used to be pretty fanatical about soccer, but I gave up going to games 25 years ago now (hated the racism and violence of the spectators) and, since then, I can kind of take it or leave it. So I've watched the England games. But, apart from that, I haven't altered my schedule, I've just turned on the TV, sound off, when a game has been on and I've had something else to do and followed it out of one eye (I'm doing that with Portugal-Iran just now).

Unfortunately, the games I've seen most of have been quite poor and I've missed some really good ones, apparently. The U.S.A. were VERY disappointing against the Czechs. It's a shame, because I'd like to see the Czechs tested. I think they could be pretty good. The French too were a big disappointment. About England -- 'nuff said, I'm preparing for the worst. I didn't see Italy or Spain and only a little bit of Argentina (against the Ivory Coast). They looked very good and, apparently, their game against Serbia was incredible. Brazil were not so impressive to me. I guess of the teams I've seen for a full game I was most impressed with Germany. I didn't watch their first game, but I saw the whole of their game against Poland. They were very unlucky, I thought, but played with energy, determination and inventiveness. With the advantage of playing at home, they'll be tough.

So, I don't know if it could happen, but my tip for the Final is Germany-Argentina.

They are playing here in Kaiserslautern which has the largest American population outside the Continental US. Hopefully, they both play well.

Reminds me. In the 80s I worked in Germany for Nixdorf Computer (who'd acquired US company Entrex) in Paderborn which was the English sector at the time. Listened 24/7 to how superior German technology was and how poorly made US computer products were. So, while drinking with the Hun at 1AM in a bar, the brothers from Germany started picking on a table full of Brits. The Brits had just lost in soccer to the Italians. The Germans taunted the Limeys saying "What a disgrace! You just lost in your NATIONAL Sport! And to the Italians!" On and on they went ragging on the quiet table of Brits. Finally, after all the years of listening but not commenting (very unusual if you know me) I cracked. Picked up my glass amd said, "Here's to Germany. 0 for 2 in THEIR national sport this century!" Silence. I was quickly ushered out of the bar.

So what do I know? The Czechs are 1-0 down to Ghana in the first minute. Good goal, bad defending. A good thing for the game, probably ...

Nowadays, there's a pretty good response for the Brits. Just ask a German football supporter what time it is and when they answer tell them "No, it's five to one". They'll get it, don't worry!

(Actually, to be fair, the Germans are being great World Cup hosts.)

I don't really follow England at soccer because of the idiocy that you mentioned. I think they are overrated and have clearly started to believe their own hype. If Argentina's performance yesterday doesn't give them a kick up the arse, nothing will.

I was struck by something they said after the first game. For the benefit of everyone else, they played Paraguay last Saturday and the temperature was in the high 80s I think. They won 1-0 and blamed the heat for their average performance. They are paid £5 MILLION a year and they can't do the extra heat training, apparently!
By blaming the heat, they surrendered the WC IMHO. They told everyone else that they didn't think that they were good enough. I used the analogy of BB and the Pats when they lose, how they NEVER blame anyone but themselves. It's about taking responsibility and empowering yourself to improve.

I saw that and I completely agree. Unbelievable! Other teams were doing all kinds of extra conditioning for just that reason (and, hey, wasn't it the same for both sides?)

So now it's 2-0, the Ghanaians are running through the Czechs at will. It's just amazing what confidence (and the lack of it) will do ...

Ghana beating the CZE and we lost to Ghana...doesn't look to good for us right now as tiebreakers are a great possibility. On the bright side...will Ghana go into our game overconfident...hopefully but doubtfull.

Ok can someone explain offsides in soccer to me? Italy had a kick in USA's end and the "entire team was offsides" I've tried to watch when they call it and I notice no difference when they don't.

It 1 - Us 1 in Germany (first half)

first half: 1-1 in every sense...

Us is not a bad team (compliments) but they should learn from our loved Patriots how to defend...

the italian goal by Gilardino was a global mistake from the Us defense

correctly also that De Rossi was put out of the game

not a bad game for the moment
