Garrett Mills could still make this roster

This thread's life should be over. Kyle brady practiced today.

The tricky thing is that Rivers' skillset mirrors Brady's, while Mills is more like Thomas. With all the talk of the rise of the H-back, Watson-Brady-Rivers is a much more traditional TE roster.

Rivers has been a very pleasant surprise, but I still think it's close between him and Mills.

Who you gonna cut for him though? The roster is already insanely tight.

Starting point is that EITHER Mills OR Rivers initially makes the 53 (along with Watson and Kyle Brady.)

Then, Testaverde returns to his workout room at home on Long island
until later in the season, when more deplorable injuries have thinned the ranks.
Cut him now. He expects it.

Both Richardson and Elgin find their rookie way onto IR ... go bulk up under Woicik's supervision, and study their playbooks.

Without belaboring the obvious nominees, at this point we have
9 DBs,
9 LBs - including Rogers -
and 7 DLs.

BB then has space for BOTH a 6th WR
AND one of:
the other of Mills/Rivers,
OR a 10th DB - thinking of Mitchell/Wesley/Baker.

The roster is 25 on O; 25 on D; and 3 kick specialists.
We have 6 WRs and either 3 or 4 TEs ... depending on whether we have 10 or 9 DBs.

(This assumes that Jackson, Jackson, Dave Thomas, and Troy remain PUPpies.
But that Seymour returns.)

How's that sound?

I think his play in the last game indicated that he could be an effective backup fullback. Unless Dave Thomas is ready to play, I don't think the Pats have anyone else better than him for that role. If Evans goes down, do the Pats just throw away their 2 back sets?

We don't carry a backup fullback. We don't really use a regular fullback that much. Sammy Morris easily takes that role if necessary.

In any case he is such a fringe player, his skillset can easily be replaced. If he makes it, good for him. If he doesn't then so be it.

It makes one wonder why he was drafted early in the 4th round last year, after Dave Thomas was taken late in the 3rd.
(Thomas, BTW, would have been taken by Houston at 98 had the NEP passed on him on Saturday.)
There were other players available - OLB/DE Mark Anderson, WR Demetrius Williams, CB Alan Zemaitis, NT Gabe Watson - who would have been of more immediate help.
That being said, however, I feel that if Kyle Brady is ready to play, effectively, vs. SD, then I would keep Mills and put Rivers on speed-dial. Rivers, after all, has had a wholly undistinguished 6-year career; a couple of more weeks won't make much difference.

Mills had a great college career but unfortunately for him he just doesn't quite fit at the NFL level. And I learned to never predict the Patriots logic with drafts, it will drive you batty.

Keep Rivers, Cut Mills. Keep Mills, Cut Rivers... I don't care anymore.

Sounds pretty good to me. How many Olinemen are you carrying? (I prefer 9)

Not if Moss is healthy, he won't.

I say he'd start opposite Moss. Why have 2 similar receivers out there, neither of which has much familiarity with TB?

In the beginning of the season, perhaps.

But Stallworth would be starting eventually, no doubt, because he's a much better receiver than Gaffney.

Only true if IR before hte roster cut down. If you make the 53, you can return from IR.
No....once u are on IR you are gone..that simple...whether before the season or after. the ONLY exceptions are those that are better and negotiate an injury settlement.

Another team may step up and trade for Mills and a few of our other potential cuts. That way they have rights, no need to negotiate.

What has Mills shown that he deserves to be on this roster? To my mind he is Klecko on offense no set position, not size enough to be a TE & has really shown nothing else, unable to even stay on the field. The potential was there but at this point nothing has shown. I think he goes his best chance is the PS.

I would say the same about the PS. We could keep Rivers and put Mills on the PS. I don't think he has shown enough to warrant a team to put him on the 53.

Good. Thank you. I'm cutting Rivers. Binkyfication runs deep.

I think so too.

He'd be a great addition if fullback/rb/TE injuries occur later in the season.
