Garcon Deal Could Affect Welker Negotiations
    By: Ian Logue

There has already been a flurry of free agent activity, but one deal has stood out that could have an effect on negotiations with Wes Welker on a long-term contract extension....

This is why it is better to strike deals before the market sets prices.

Which is why they'd probably be content to let him remain on the $9 million franchise tag for this year. There's little salary cap savings to be had if Welker wants market value.

Welker is saying all the right things as of now - hopefully he won't hold out for fear of injury and/or to spur negotiations. But if he decides to do so it's tough to blame him. He's looking at a big payday next year if healthy and productive.

That being said, with Garçon being so much younger it's tough to compare the two players - hopefully Wes will opt for security and guaranteed money that's less than what he would receive next year if he can avoid injury.

I'd say the price just jumped significantly for Wallace and other young receivers though - so the Redskins are not helping their league brethren who are not as cavalier about the cap as they are.

Garcon's age is just one of many things that make it tough to compare the two...:bricks:

And there could be substantial cap savings this season if Welker was signed to a market value deal. If he was signed to the same deal as Garcon his cap hit this year could be as little as $5M - $6M+ depending on structure (which depends on what level of potential dead cap you're willing to deal with in year 5 or year 4, $4-8M or 3-6M agaisnt a $140M or more cap).

Without going through all that again, I'll just point out that Welker reportedly turned down 2 for 16, guaranteed. Given that, why on Earth would he take 3 for 21?

And why should he take so much less per year than Garcon, when he's a much better player?

Re: Pierre Garcon rejects 5 year contract with Colts

Seems like Garcon was right about that 5 years at 8 million per.

Mike Shanahan knows what he's doing he bringing in a young Rookie QB he's making sure his Weapons are there. They got a nice kid from Miami last year who got hurt Leonard Hankerson his name i think with Garson - Moss and Gaffney unlike us the Skins are not lacking at WR.:snob:

I don't think anything that the Redskins do affect most of the league. Albert Haynesworth didn't have a huge affect on what Vince Wilfork got.

Stupid contracts usually do not have a huge affect on other contracts. Other WR contracts from other teams might have affect, but so will Colston who appears to have taken a hometown discount.

If Mike Shannahan knew what he was doing he wouldn't be coaching in Washington these days...two years in to a 5 year plan he won't be given the time to see through unless he's winning the division by year 4.

At this point Wes is either playing the year out under the franchise tag or there's a chance, slight though it might be, they sign Danny Amendola or Eddie Royal and then flip Wes to KC. KC has money to spend and Cassel and Wes already have a relationship and chemistry. I think Tom would freak making this unlikely but there's still a remote chance.

Amendola is almost literally a poor man's Welker: Welker's averaged 11 YPC for his career; Amendola's at ~8 YPC.

Welker's numbers pre Patriots are only slightly better. I'm not saying he would match his production and they would obviously need to upgrade the outside in a big way if they went this route. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

Welker hs TFB throwing him the ball, we can only speculate as to what Amendola's number would be if here were on the Pats.

If Welker thought they were remotely preparing to flip him he would not sign his tag prior to week 1. You can't trade a franchise tagged player until he signs the tag.

Most likely they are resigned to a worst case scenario where they pay him the tag for 2 seasons. They could have gotten him signed for 4 years with that much guaranteed money, but they low balled him instead on unguaranteed years by 2 and guaranteed money by about $4M and any negotiations hit a wall thereafter as a result. Welker will see that guaranteed money in two years one way or the other. And unless he suffers a catastrophic injury he will probably see whatever he missed out on on the back end as a FA at 33. Welker is a guy who always bets on himself, so I wouldn't expect him to sweat it or cave to the sure of security. Like he said, he's already made more money than he'd ever dreamed he would.

Very respectable, I'd pay Welker that in a heartbeat.

I think if they were serious about flipping him it would be a Branch situation where they allow him to find out his value on the open market and work out a trade. No team is making a trade without the contract ironed out and the Pats aren't taking a contingency deal.

I think it's infinitely more likely as you said they tag him two years in a row assuming the production holds up. It's just a never say never with Bill.

Why wes can play under the tag now get 9.4 million and if franchised he will get close to 11 next year.

why will take less ... help me understand. also at 2013 the cap floor is going to start. so if the pats let him walk he will get insane money from a team that needs to reach the cap floor.

I'd pay Welker the veteran minimum in a heartbeat, too. Why would he take either deal?
