    Garcia on the trading block?

This I would do. If it's true.

Agreed; even if Cassel sets the world on fire, there's an open slot behind him.

Re: Garcia on the trading block?

Yeah, that's very tantalizing. Low upside, low downside. He's no worse than a league average QB. You can't say that for Cassel as of now.

Re: Garcia on the trading block?

    Really? I disagree completely.

First, I'd rather see what Cassel has than sign any other FA.

But Garcia is a much better option than Simms or Rattay. I think it was Football Outsiders who last year was singing Garcia's praises and basically saying he is one of the most underrated QBs of this era. He's had a QB rating over 90 four seasons in his career and his career rating is 87.0. Simms has a career 71 rating and Rattay with 81.9 in much more limited playing time, for reference.

Garcia is a good starting QB in the NFL. Can't say that about Simms or Rattay.

Re: Garcia on the trading block?

The "how about Simms/Culpepper/Bledsoe/Unitas" threads have definitely gotten out of hand, but the fact remains that the team is down a QB. A solid vet to hold the clipboard is a natural thing to seek.

Re: Garcia on the trading block?

Why not? Cassel is going to get sacked a lot more than Brady did. He'll get hit a lot more after he throws the ball. That's what happens to inexperienced QBs. That means he'll have a high chance of missing snaps or games. Bring in Garcia now and you have him ready to step in if need be.

When I first caught wind of this earlier in the week, I was going to post. I actually wouldn't be surprised if Garcia intentionally began trying to shoot his way out of town, as soon as he heard the news about Brady.

    And then what?

He's an oft (and now almost always) injured malcontent with a hugely selfish ego which is why he was never a good fit in Tampa despite some ability to win. If he is being shopped or is cut that will be why. What do you do with him in week 5 when he will certainly be ready in his estimation if you don't have need for him to start? And if he did start and suffer his now usual weekly debilitating injury, then what???

PS I'm sure by know BB knew he'd be injured and Johnson would be stepping in. That's likely why like most of the league he questions whether Simms can still play at all. Gruden may be arrogant buit he's no dope and he too had to know this was a potential early season/season long scenario...

I'd have to think there would be some pretty serious competition out there for Garcia.

Gruden was horrible during the Brett Favre saga, and while you can say that Garcia should have just taken it like a man and not gotten bothered by the whole thing, I'd be willing to overlook that. Is Garcia a bit of a prima donna? Yes. Is there reason to be suspicious of a guy with his numbers who has bounced around like he has? Yes.

But there is not, and is not likely to be, a better option out there now or at any time in the rest of the year. We're talking about a consistent career 90 rating passer who has only once had a receiving corps anything like he would have in New England (and who, by the way, had a career year that year).

He has 149 career TDs v. 77 INTs. He's a very solid third down QB. He went 13 TDs against 4 INTs last year for a playoff team throwing to Hilliard and Galloway. He had a below average game in the playoffs last year against the Giants, but so did the guy we just put on the IR -- that defensive line was flying that game.

This is the no brainer of all no brainers. Do I want a fairy tale ending where Matt Cassel pulls a 2001 Tom Brady? Of course. It would likely be the most memorable sports rooting event of the last 20 years or more. But you can't let the dream for the perfect be the enemy of the good. No brainer.

He seemed the good soldier here in Philly in '06 backing up McNabb and went 5-1 as a replacement with a 10-2 TD/Int ratio and took them further in the playoffs than they deserved to go....Worth a look....

I am completely ready to sink or swim with Cassel and I think we can swim but this certainly would be a better option than Culpepper, Simms, Rattay, Drew, or Babe Parelli

I was thinking this immediately after the Bucs mysteriously annointed Greise the starter. Figured Garcia might be trade bait.

I'd love for the Pats to give a 5th for him. No brainer. Smart vet backup, no immediate threat to Cassel. If Cassel is a total bust, by Week 5 or 6, Garcia would be up to speed and could play.

Makes too much sense not to do it.

Swimming with Cassel is great and we'll see.....Garcia as a life perserver makes sense to me.

I agree. No brainer. Given the uncertainty over Brady, having Garcia would make sense for nest year, too.

He has four distinct disadvantages when compared with Matt G.

    1. He is hurt.
    2. He doesn't know the play book.
    3. He will cost cap space.
    4. He will cost at least one draft pick.
