If it was last year, Butler would have started but I'm not so sure this year with the depth we have with Springs, Bodden, Wheatley and Wilhite. The only way I see him starting is if we become plagued with injuries at the CB position, like last year.

I would love to see Chung win the starting SS job opposite Meriweather, leaving James Sanders to play a rotational role backing up both positions.

I think Butler is a starter by 2010. Not so sure about 2009, though he has the potential.

I'd love to see Sebastian Vollmer win the starting RT job by 2010. Not out of the question.

I think there's a rookie we might be overlooking, and Vollmer might be that guy. On April 27 this seemed like an uninspiring draft; by 2010 this could prove a much more productive crop of rookies than expected.

Pats Draft class uninspiring? You can't make chicken salad out of chickensh#t. I think the Pats did the best they could with what they had to work with. I would call this entire draft class uninspiring.

This draft will be looked back on as a meat and potatoes draft. Lots of good players adding to the awesome depth the Patriots possesss at all positions.

Bill Belichick completed the rebuilding of his Offense in 2007. The proof of the pudding, was a record setting 50 passing TDs and the all time 589 point scoring total and an undefeated regular season. The Offense was set for five years with but minor tweaking. In 2008, the Pats final interim tweak was the addition of some RB depth.

This draft two years later will mark the completion of an entirely new generation of Defenders. In short, when these players earn their spurs, the New Englend Defense, already Top Ten/Top Eight wil be rebuilt for the next half decade.

At the same time this double draft, also returned to start grooming some of the long range replacements for that Offense. Tate could eventually becomes a next generation number 1 WR. Vollmer at RT will learn and probably take Kaczur's job by 2010. That will free Kaczur to be the swing OT at the least, But the Patriots are pretty sound at reserve tackle, already.

But they know that the interior of the Offensive line will need to be addressed in a few years, Neal is going on 33, and Hochstein the prime utility reserve, is turning 32.

Volmer settling in at RT, frees Kaczur to go inside and immediately compete for a starting Guard position, or at the very least upgrade Hochstein at prime utility reserve position, pushing him to the second reserve. Belichick usually carries two interior reserves. Quite frankly, Billy Yates is barely adequate.

At the same time Belichick drafted Orhnberger who is a very quick, tough guy with some mobility, albeit a little undersized. He could eventually provide the second swing guard/center reserve, but more than likely will push for the starting Center position eventually. Bussey is a PS candidate and maybe more. He has the size to be a starting Guard with some grooming, as well.:D

This draft will also be recognized as the first attempts at grooming eventual replacements, fo ronce again re-tooling the Offense, in a year or three.:)

It's a little early to make the uninspiring statement about the entire draft class. For all you know there are 3 future probowlers from this squad.

I expect Chung, Butler, Vollmer and Orhnberger to compete for plying time. If Vollmer is as talented as some say, he should be able to compete with the mediocre Kaczur right now and O should get time when Neal, inevitably, gets hurt. I'm also not convinced that Tate will be PUPed, if he makes the Branch rehab schedule he'll be ready around the start of camp. Allowing him to practice, etc, adds to the probability he'll be a long term success for us so if his knee is ready I expect Tate to make the opening day roster.

Brandon Tate PuPed or not was a fantastic draft pick imo. I watched some of his games at North Carolina and he is just a terror with the ball in his hands.Of all Wr's in the 09 draft I'm convinced none of them make the adjustments getting to ball that this kid does. I really think a few years down the road he has a chance to be the best player out of this years class for the Pats.

In four years there is a chance that only the Long Snapper is left on our team.

Understand the Raiders were looking to get Volmer from the Pats in a trade. He has to have some value.

Supposedly the Raiders wanted Vollmer and O'Connell; given the logic of that, they might as well have asked for Welker while they were at it. ;)

Omigawd, Ochmed, you forgot to mention Vollmer and McKenzie, good, relatively cheap players whom I expect to show a surprising amount of talent and desire for years to come in the Pats uniform.

This draft help improve the weakness of this team which was from spot 35-53 on the roster.
