What happens every time a player is re-signed or restructures on every team in the NFL? The deal becomes backloaded, making it cheaper now, and causing the player to be cut later.

Now. What if. What if...the Patriots were going to try something radically different.

They have 20 mil in caps space right now according to everyone here.

What if the set themselves up for long term success, by doing the opposite and FRONTloading deals with Seymour and Branch?

It's probably inherently risky with injury and what not, but think about it.

If the contracts all diminished as they moved on, it would create more room for the new players to sign.

OK, now tell me why it won't work :) It was just a thought.

Heard that this afternoon on the Big Show....

wow...i didn't hear that. I'm in NY.

I imagine someone will correct me but I think yearly salaries can decrease by no more than 30% or something like that. So I think you could do it but only in a limited manner.

Although you could do it with a roster bonus, I guess, which isn't prorated like a signing bonus and probably doesn't count for the 30% thing (if I'm right on the 30%).

I would think a potential holdout from a player in later years may be a concern.

Personally i'd be all for it with Seymour.
