Real Deal - Real Deal: Free cell phone

The free phones are paid for with money from OUR phone bills. That little charge called the "USF", the universal service fee, and who's eligible. If you get food stamps? Fuel Assistance? Mass Health? If you're part of many of the states programs for low-income families, you are also eligible for discounted landlines or free cells.

I wouldn't mind paying for free cellphones or land lines for the elderly or disabled.

To give healthy people free cellphones makes me sick.
Why not just give them a newspaper, so that they can check out the
    Help Wanted ads.

What is next, free cable TV & WiFi at home ???

At this rate America will be another Castro Cuba: driving old cars and left-over technology from BEFORE the socialist revolution.

Hey, how 'bout that CRA!! How'd that work out???

Another Reagan Program that continues to saddle the consumer and probably will for the rest of our lives...

    COMMENCE BACKPEDALLING!

Regardless of who put this into effect or when, it needs to stop. This is wrong. Period.
Sooner or later, those who back the republiccans blindly while bashing the Dems for anything bad that happens (and vice-versa) need to grow up. There is no difference between these "two groups". Thet are more somilar to the AFC and NFC than anything.

The facts don't seem to support the article. The article provides a link to this page:

Link Up & Lifeline - What Consumers Should Know

"Link Up: Link Up will pay a 50% discount or up to a maximum of $30.00 of an eligible consumers home telephone installation fees. An additional discount may apply to residents of federally recognized tribal lands.

"Lifeline: A consumer can save between $16.00 and $18.39 on their basic service monthly bill. These benefits apply to basic local telephone service charges that are purchased as measured service (including local usage), or as flat rate service."

Unless the telephone companies are also giving these people discounts that are not available to the rest of us, it's hard to imagine how they get free cell phones or landline phones out of these savings.

Nice. So this is part of, or was extended by, the Telecommunications Act of 1996. What existed before I haven't gotten to yet, but I believe the "Lifeline" thing was from 1984. More to come as time permits. Anyhow, looks like people are calling international as well. LOLOLOL!

Like I was saying about running a lemonade stand in another thread. Too many people can't grasp the simple fact that costs are passed on to the consumer. That a tax for one, ends up being a cost for all. The gubmit mandates that telecommunications companies pay for free this, and subsidized that, and the end result, no matter how well intentioned the original policy was, is that the consumer foots the bill. Apparently the program was originally designed to ensure that schools and libraries had access to phone and internet, at a discounted rate. That then became the elderly, and now free cell phones for deadbeats to call overseas. Nice!

Unfortunately, as a culture there is a large group that is expecting something for nothing. It's getting worse and worse, laziness and a lack of accountability. There is a whole welfare culture, that must be erased.
