Franchise tag now in effect for 2011; will Pats tag Mankins?

Re: Franchise tag in effect

Not sure why the media ever thought this was in doubt. The tag is applied a week prior to the start of FA. If they didn't tag players this year and in the wee hours before March 4th a new CBA was hammered out, or if one is hammered out down the road, it would be too late to tag a pending FA a team was intent on retaining or being compensated for in trade...

It will be interesting to see how many players are tagged under the circumstances. Polian has already stated that Manning will be tagged barring a contract agreement. For some signing that tag would probably be wise because although it might not guarantee nearly what they'd hope to see in UFA signing bonus, if 500 UFA suddenly flood the FA market under a new more restrictive cap the kind of deals they were anticipating may not materialize in 2011...

Re: Franchise tag in effect

i think they made a deal with Mankins that if he came back they would not use the tag on him this coming year

No evidence to suggest that happened. They knew he would come in about when he did because otherwise he'd have lost a year of service towards FA and he wouldn't have had a shot at the pro bowl...

Re: Franchise tag in effect

Mankins franchised and signed to long-term deal

In a perfect world, yes. I'm very worried about how he'll react to the tag:(

x2

I cant imagine that he'd be very happy at all about it.

Mankins said that he was always planning on showing up when he did. Additionally he only showed up two, or so, weeks before he had to. If the Patriots would throw such a big bone it wouldn't have been for such a short period. Clearly I don't know if they did or not but the circumstantial evidence says they didn't.

Thats OK.

The Pats will control where he goes and how much compensation they will get.

Re: Franchise tag in effect

How much is the tag figure?

Re: Franchise tag in effect

For OL in 2010 it was $10.7M (because they lump guards and centers in with tackles). So it would be a couple of million more than they are willing to pay him in a long term deal. But that didn't stop them from tagging Asante. It's still less than half of what they would have to pony up in signing bonus and/or guaranteed money in a long term deal. And at this juncture it would be kind of academic heading into a potential lockout, because if there is one no one is going anywhere. But it protects teams rights in the interim and they can always pull tags in July if things aren't getting resolved CBA wise. Or he could sign it and then it would be pretty hard to complain whether they ultimately played or traded him...

One thing potential FA players have to be mindful of is that this year even if a new CBA does get worked out in time for their to be a FA period (and owners have already stated that if one isn't done in time to allow for camps and pre season they will be inclined to postpone FA altogether in 2011 and simply require those players to accept some sort of one time salary bump formula in the interim) they will be entering a fairly flooded market with nearly 500 FA and 70 pro bowl FA hitting the market under a new more restrictive cap. The bird in the hand may be more appealing to some of them. Including their union for whom the last thing they want to see is a lackluster FA period on the heels of a new CBA.

Re: Franchise tag in effect

Not true.

His compensation for 2011 would be the franchise amount ofr LT's, over $11M.

Thats OK.

Re: Franchise tag in effect

Hali and Woodley well never reach free agency then. Looks like the Pats will have to trade up high in the draft to get an impact pass rusher.

agree ................

Re: Franchise tag in effect

This really is for nothing more than show at this point. The owners will apply the tag, the players will claim it is invalid because there is not language in the CBA that gives them the right to do so. There will be crying, knashing of teeth, lawyers with threats of lawsuits and then the matter will ultimately be decided by the make-up of the new freee agency rules when they agree on a CBA.

Compensation they will get, not he.

Compensation in relation to draft picks or players that NE will ask for if Mankins is dealt. Its clear as day that NE isnt using the tag so they can pay Mankins 10+ Mil next season.

Re: Franchise tag in effect

Mankins will receive more than $10M in compensation to play in 2011. Is the word "compensation" that you don't understand?

No player movement is allowed without a new CBA.
Mankins may get a franchise tag ( and guaranteed 1 year contract ),but Patriots will not be able to trade him untill a new CBA is agreed upon.
Patriots should give him a new contract before March first with stipulation that he'll get paid, lets say,72 hr after a new CBA is reached.IMHO.

Re: Franchise tag in effect

I may be wrong...but it sounds like Mankins is looking out for Mankins and Pats will be looking out for Pats.....what else is new?

Expect a tag applied, an unhappy Mankins...and then who knows what will happen. Not sure BB will think BIG $$$ is worth it for a guard, no matter how good....maybe a trade is in the future for Logan.....Draft a couple of OL early to be ready for his eventual departure and Neal's retirement...also for the departure of Matt Light (unless he gives a hometown discount)....

Do I hope it works out that Logan is signed long term...sure...

Chance of it happening is probably 50-50 at this time.....
