Guys,

This is hypothetical and I know it has about 0% chance of happening, I'm just curious.

If a team franchises a special teams player is that number based on his real position or his "fake" position. "Fake" is not the right word, but I can't think of another term for it right now.
For example, if Slater gets franchised is he a gunner or a wide receiver. What if during the season he had 8 to 16 snaps at wide receiver either in "junk" time or because of injury?

Where is the line, 20 snaps? 30 snaps?

Who decides, the NFL or the NFLPA - or some judge?

And, if it exists, does the special teamer designation include returners that do not have major roles elsewhere, I'm thinking Devin Hester? Who decides that - was Amendola included in that number? Or Blount last year?

Yeah, it is a long off season and wondering about Slater's franchise number ... well ... let's just say I have a lot of time.

Ian, I have no idea what forum this should be in. None seemed to be a good fit.

Double thread. :) oops. Sorry.

I'm not a cap expert but I believe it would be at their "real" position, as you say. Slater would be a WR like Hester. Amendola is a WR; Blount is a RB.

I think it's at their listed position. Jimmy Graham a few years ago was tagged as a te but wanted the higher wr tag, claiming that's mostly The job he performed. Iirc, the arbitrator ruled he was a te.

BTW: from the other thread—there is no ST designation ATM, which is why Slater is listed as a WR.

Slater would be franchise tagged as a WR. That's why, of course, why you would never see the franchise tag used on a special teams specialist (other than kickers). There are several positions that would never see a franchise tag used. For example, you would never see a Guard tagged, because the franchise tag number for all o-linemen is based on the five highest paid left tackles in the NFL. It would be insane to pay a guard that much money.
