First off, the Stats you are using are from THIS YEAR ONLY. This idea that one year of stats make him a "middle-of-the-road" kicker is just silly. It's about consistency. And what you fail to understand is that Gostkowski's stats this year are done on a leg that is still healing. Why is it that people like yourself can't comprehend this?

You should check out the game thread from the Dolphins game. There were numerous people claiming that he should be cut and that he sucks and that they hated him.

Question: Is it legal to keep a few balls on the sideline by the heater and bring them in just for kicking?

No. They have to be kept by the "K" ball holder.

You may have somewhat misunderstood how I feel. I'm not sure why I don't trust him, but I can't shake the feeling. There is no other kicker I can think of whom I'd rather have. The way I feel is not logical, but to quote Bill, it is what it is.

Your point, I gather, is that Gostowski is a middle-of-the-road kicker even in an injury-recovery year, and a superior kicker otherwise.

    Makes sense.

I don't know why "people like yourself" can't understand that the NFL is a "what have you done for me lately" league. Also I "fail to understand" why "people like you" have to judge other people's reply as "silly". It's just a disagreement of opinion, no need for the bullsh*t histrionics.

BTW, how do you know he's "still healing"? I did a google search and all I came up with is this info from training camp:

Ref: 'No limitations' for kicker Gostkowski - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

And this from just before training camp:

Ref: RealTime Fantasy Sports - Stephen Gostkowski

One of the best kickers in the league (top 3) and he has haters? Only in New England!

    Disable Jersey

Brady was all set for 2009, too.
Welker was all set for 2010, too.

Players come back from major injuries, and they talk about being fully healed and the like, but they don't get back to "100%" until time heals what needs healing.

Well, he's following a legend, and BB passed on the FG attempt in 2007. Until he gets his own 2001-like opportunities, he'll always be denigrated by some.

The only one with BS histrionics is yourself. Clearly you have issues with people having opinions about your opinions.

BTW, Gostkowski has hit 26 of 31 FGs this year, which is just slitghly below his career average. And 3 of the misses were from beyond 40 yards. 1 of them beyond 50 yards. I am judging him on the here and now. I wish you would.

Clearly you have never had a major leg injury of any sort. You don't understand about the muscle loss that takes place and how much rehab is required to get them back to even 90%. And Gostkowski's Quad was torn entirely off the bone. Which means no rehab prior to the surgery and a longer time before being able to start the rehab and slower intervals to ensure that it's not damaged again. And, before you ask, I do know about the sort of muscle atrophy that occurs because, after I tore my ACL, my thigh went from being 23in circumference to about 16.625 in. in about 3 months. And it took me 18 months to get it back to 21 in. And I wasn't fully healed. And I am also taking into considering the advances they've made today vs. when I tore my ACL almost 15 years ago.

So, while Gostkowski might have been cleared with no limitations, that doesn't mean his leg strength is back to 100%. That's what I was getting at. Just like Welker wasn't back to 100% when he started playing again after his surgery.

I didn't realize people thought we had a problem at kicker. Well, he's not the Tom Brady of his position, therefore he sucks. Is that right?

When he hit the game winning field goal as a rookie in the divisional game at San Diego From 51 yards with :40 left, the man gained my confidence.

It's something to monitor. The Ghostowski pre-injury was probably worth the contract. I believe he was perfect in the 2006 playoffs and I really don't remember him missing any key FG's in any playoff games altogether. His kickoff distances were crucial too. But if next year comes and he is still middle of the pack in FG% and towards the bottom in TB%, we've got to part ways with that contract. Same argument when we let AV go and went with Ghost in 2006, when you feel someone new can come in and provide the same if not better production for a small fraction of the price, you've got to opt for change. It worked then until Ghost's injury 4.5 years later. But like I said I'm willing to wait till next year to see if this is a trend.

The only real problem I have with Gostkowski is that his damn last name is too close to Gronkowski and I have made this mistake more than a few times!
