Following Workout With the Patriots, Free Agent Matt Roth Reportedly Increased His Asking Price
    By: Ian Logue

A couple of people asked me about whether or not free agent Matt Roth might be potentially ending up in New England, but that's starting to look a little less likely....

I kind of figured his demand went up following his visit with us. I don't think he's the type of guy who wants a 1-year deal.

I don't begrudge anyone trying to get the best deal for themselves, especially a free agent. I am not sure how much it is a good idea to play chicken though. Who will blink first, Roth or a team?

I suppose the plus side for him is that all it takes is one team out of 32 to blink.

    Matt Roth's agent says, 1 year/$3 million

    PatriotsHaven Derek Havens
Matt Roth has raised his asking price. His agents sent out an email to #NFL teams today saying he's available for 1yr/$3M. #Patriots

Re: Matt Roth's agent says, 1 year/$3 million

    A) That's kind of sad in a way that he's sending out emails looking for 1 year opportunities. B) 3 million seems reasonable for his production, we paid Tully more for less. C) Unfortunately, I can't imagine we have any space left after signing Ellis to a 5 milli deal.

Chuck Norris can be signed for less.

That's more than $2M more than either Moore or Anderson, who he'd be replacing as the #4 DE. Not worth it.

Re: Matt Roth's agent says, 1 year/$3 million

At first glance it doesn't seem like a terribly unreasonable price. But after taking a look at Pats Cap....eh....we only have 11 players counting against the cap for more than that in '11. All of whom are well, well, well out of Matt Roth's league.

    (Well, all except James Sanders.)

Don't know if he'll get the $3 million or not, but it seems that 32 teams agree that whatever Roth was asking for before was too much.

Re: Matt Roth's agent says, 1 year/$3 million

People, the Raiders went from 17 million over the cap to a few million under on the same day they signed Kevin Boss to a 4 million a year contract. The cap isn't, has never been, and will never be a problem for signing players, it can be manipulated at will.

Does anyone actually think that Belichick is going to sign a guy who 'raised his asking price' by sending out an email to all 32 teams?? (And to top it off, he did this AFTER he worked out with us, and we apparently offered him a reasonable deal)

The Roth train has moved on in Foxborough, no way he's coming here. At least not for 3 mill/per.

Chuck Norris could also average 15 sacks a year...

When Chuck Norris rushes the passer, the quarterback sacks himself out of fear.

Yeah, but that's what happens with Matt Roth too---and Adam Seward for that matter.

Re: Matt Roth's agent says, 1 year/$3 million

As long as you are willing to cut people, or push money into the future, you mean.

Ravens did it in 1999 and 2000, signed a lot of people to big money, then in 2001 cut about 19 of 22 starters. They got a superbowl ring out of it at the cost of losing their team. Titans did the same thing about the same time, and SF, too, and don't even have rings to show for it. At least the ravens recovered. Sf and the Titans have never been the same.

Besides, why anyone would want us to emulate the Raiders way of signing players is beyond me. They suck, and their cap manipulations are much to blame. Ditto the Redskins. Sign big, cut early, take a bath, and have no quality depth.

Thanks, but I'd just as soon not be the Raiders East. I'll stick to the way the Pats and Colts do it. Seems to be working a lot better in building teams that compete every year, year after year.

Re: Matt Roth's agent says, 1 year/$3 million

Overreact much? I was just saying we could fit a 1 year/3 million dollar salary into this year's budget without breaking a sweat. That shouldn't be the reason we don't take a look at Matt Roth at that price.

But sure, if you want to extrapolate from a mere observation that I want us to adopt a Raiders-like policy regarding the team's finances, be my guest. Jesus...
