I know 50 is a nice even number (and plenty of articles). But in the name of football, wouldn't 53 have been a more natural number (or would it have seemed too much like it would mean the all time Patriot/Belichick football team which might be another fine theory-crafted article).

This is football. The first thing 53 should represent is the number of active players on the NFL roster. As for cards, 53 means the Joker is in the deck and we have one of those here .

Considering the Patriots history of cheating and that both cards and football are games, it is more probable that not that the Pats are generally aware that they have 53 men on their roster every season. Loss of a two 1sts, two fourths and a 5th and a fine of $2,000,000.
