I figure the only place I could fly without my body lotions, shampoo, mousse and gel deodorants and not feel self-concious would be France.

I mean I'm American so they hate me anyway. What does it matter if I'm smelly and oily? I would probably fit right in.

I'll treat all Euro vacations like a camping trip.

If it increases my chances of arriving I'm all for it. (As a matter of interest, do you use your shampoo during the flight? Wow!)

No but I'm not always fond of hotels sample 'poos. It might just push me to rid myself of the rest of my hair.....

I'll be more serious about the matter in 2 weeks when I do have to fly.

I'm not sure I'm overly thrilled to pack away my cell and 'other' valuables in my checked luggage though.

I haven't followed this closely, but are you not going to be allowed to have this stuff even in your checked baggage?

I'm just three weeks away from flying to the U.S. (but not on one of the targeted airlines) so I'm feeling a bit edgy. I would certainly not mind U.S. airlines getting a bit more serious about checking hand baggage.

US flights are saying no liquids of any kind on carry on (except meds and baby formula).

This what I saw about British flights:

Passengers traveling to the United Kingdom should contact their airline for information about any extra security measures or precautions that might be required. Laptop computers, mobile phones and iPods are among items banned on British flights.

If medications are allowed on planes, then what is the point of excluding liquods then? Terrorists could just make weapons that look like medicine.

The meds will be checked and there'll be very few of them. You may well get pulled aside for a special security interview and asked for medical evidence that you need it during the flight. I don't think that they'll be happy with bottles of cough syrup.

Otherwise, there will be absolutely nothing carried on, except your passport and papers (visa, etc.) Parents with babies are being asked to drink from the baby's bottle to show that it really is milk!

    Look at this:

    CABIN LUGGAGE ALLOWED
    Pocket-sized wallets/ purses, plus contents
    Passports/ travel tickets
Prescription medicines, not in liquid form unless verified as authentic
Essential medical items, eg diabetic kit
    Glasses & sunglasses, no cases
    Contact lens holders, no solution
Baby food & milk for those with infants - bottle contents must be tasted by accompanying passenger
    Essential sanitary items for infants
    Female sanitary items, unboxed
    Tissues, unboxed, or handkerchiefs
Keys, but no electric key fobs

Something tells me that the authorities are taking this SERIOUSLY.

How will that stop terrorists from creating a solid pill-like weapon that can be dissolved in water once on board?

My point is, if terrorists want to kill people, they WILL find a way.

The only long term solution to this problem is to address the ROOTS of the problem and fix them, not just deal with the symptoms.

It would be helpful to think about why terrorists hate us (Isreal), what they want, why they are willing to fight in such a desparate way, and how we can end this threat without killing off all Muslims (a billion plus people).

First the airlines need to fire all of the bag 'tossers.'

Then they need to recruit and pay a professional staff of baggage 'handlers.'

Then they need to banish any bag bigger than what a chick might take out on a date to the cargo hold, short of critical/medical type stuff of course.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the French hated themselves! Strange race.

A trend that has permeated many of our existing structures, has to do with the lowest bidders, not the best qualified to provide security for air travel passengers. Bottom line is the almighty dollar, while millions of dollars of fraud is being perpetuated in Iraq, the Dept. of Homeland Security is shortchanged in this part of their budge.

    Two thoughts...

First, heartfelt thanks to Scotland Yard, our allies the Brits, the Muslim informer(s), and all involved for saving over a thousand lives yesterday.

Secondly, a prayer of thanksgiving for all those families NOT devastated by yet another group of Islamic terrorist murderers.

See, I think that's part of the problem. People are so concerned with what 'they' might need that they totally ignore things like bag size and restrictions. 'They' think that they're the exception to every rule.

My husband and I are flying to the UK area at the end of October, and of course we're a little weirded out about it now. But are we going to let it paralyze us with fear? No. We're going to do as we're told by TSA, get on our flights, and be good passengers.

No doubt, you're right -- but, in the short term, I'll settle for flying in a safe aircraft.

I'm immensely thankful for those lives saved too.

I was starting to think of what it will be like to spend seven hours on the plane with only the inflight movies for entertainment and how to get the stuff I'd planned to take as hand baggage to the U.S. Boy, those are really MINOR considerations in comparison with increasing the chance of getting there safely.

    You (ALL) will be fine.

I flew to Ireland just after 9/11. JFK was so eerily empty that it made me as anxious before a flight as I've ever been. Plus all the armed National guards. New experience...now I go about my business.

I'd rather have the long lines and the extra security checks too.

Oh, I've found international security people to be far more courteous to persons and property than the US security (TSA or whomever).

Hear hear. The guys at MI5 and their Pakistani colleagues seem to have done their job. They do an impossible job very well.

    France? Not for me.

Working on a Anglo-Irish trip for the Spring with or without toiletries or electronic devices.
