You can expect UNemployment figures to shoot up because of this. It always happens, even in a good economy. As soon as employers are forced by the government to raise their pay scale, people get laid off. Never fails.

The inmates are definitely running the asylum now.

Paying someone I don't care who, less then $10 hr should be a crime.Quit buying your 500k houses and 50k boats and 30k hummers and start paying your workers what there worth.

Here in the USA, we are workers not slaves........

You know this has nothing to do with Obama don't you..

New Federal Minimum Wage Increase for 2007, 2008, 2009

One thing not clear about the Unification Church is its social justice mission, just about every religious group advocates for social justice and in this case a fair wage for the working poor.. if I am to read this post correctly, there is advocacy for corporate america instead of advocacy for the working poor..

$7.25 per hour is $290.00 per week.. $15,000 per year.. the Federal Poverty Guidelines for a family of 3 is $18,310... except in Alaska which is $22,890.. this wage will not exactly create wealth amongst the working poor.

So... you want to punish rank-and-file American laborers rather than the siuts at WalMart?

No, he is stating a simple fact. When businesses are forced to pay unskilled labor a rate that is artificially high, well, businesses simply won't hire them. This will affect summer teen jobs.

That may work well in a booming economy, but now many have to go to return to work in entry level positions and this is what they have to look forward to.

Know a few folks who have been laid off, and are finding that their unemployment pays more than entry level jobs they can find.

If it wasn't for the greed of minimum wage earners we would not be in the economic crisis we're in. We have to crack down on those greedy bastards.

That doesn't change the fact that there will be fewer of these jobs "to look forward to" the higher the pay goes. Your point may well be an accurate statement of fact but it doesn't counter ljuneau's point.

What we need is for the government to quit getting in the way of businesses making profit. That's what they hire people for, to make a profit.

Businesses should be able to do whatever they want?

Should a business be able to pollute as much as they like?...(because pollution abatement costs a lot of money, which cuts into profits)

Where did this statement come from? Talk about highjacking a thread. Can we stick to the thread subject and not get into silliness?

So if because the economy is in the tank, you could hire someone for something like $3.50 an hour right now???

I don't have any idea what people are willing to do certain jobs for. But there is a floor below which you won't find an employee.

Perhaps the minimum wage is just a comfort zone that has become institutionalized in my mind, cannot imagine the climate for many if it did not exist... too wide open for systemic abuse.

Walmart is the worst example of an American corporation. It should stand as an embaressment to the American way of life. They treat their workers like sh1t.

The reply I always get to Walmart treating their employees like crap is, "Hey, no one is forced to work there".

To me, that's a cop-out big time. If THE largest company in the world thinks it can pay their employees poverty level income then they deserve to have the hand of gov't slammed upon them.
