    Alien, Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie ever.

2010. Sit back, relax and let your mind go.

Star Wars and LOTR movies are also great.

LOTR made Star Wars episodes I,II and III look even worse. Lucas has so much material to work with and they just stunk.

Hands down, my favorite science fiction flick is Blade Runner. It's not just a flashy movie and cool looking movie, but a great philosophical exploration of the advancement of technology. Rutger Hauer's speech at the end is incredible.

Otherwise, Terminator and Predator are amazing. As is the Fifth Element.

I'm a huge fan of LOTR (probably my favortie movies), but I don't know if they're science fiction.

(can't think of any more right now)= Wildo

When I put that on my post I had only thought of the first three or four movies that I posted. Then they started coming to me. I didn't put it there as a joke originally But after the list kept growing it did seem kind of humorous. BTW I never could get into 2001 either, I never got got what the big deal was. It seemed kind of boring.

Such long lists! It's hard to find five that haven't been mentioned yet.

    But here they are ...

    1. Barbarella Camp as a row of tents, but Jane Fonda in the Excessive Orgasm Machine. Mmm ...

    2. Stalker Soviet Sci-fi. Tarkovsky and the Strugatsky Brothers combined. Truly beautiful and mysterious.

    3. Solaris Another Tarkovsky (not the Soderbergh re-make). This time based on a Stanislaw Lem novel. Beautiful and mysterious again -- and, I found, very moving. A scientist finds his dead wife re-incarnated by a planet that has the ability to materialize thoughts.

    4. Metropolis Was this the first science fiction film (1927)? Still one of the best. Extraordinary architecture (Fritz Lang actually studied architecture, I believe) and amazing, expressionist cinematography. The famous beautiful robot and a classic mad scientist.

    5. Dark Star Low budget and totally neglected 1974 John Carpenter movie. A space-ship is on a long, long mission to do a tedious job. They are terminally bored and somewhat crazy until they find themselves having to deal with an intelligent bomb. If you like science fiction, you must see this. It stands to 2001/Star Trek etc. as M.A.S.H. does to your average war movie.

And, of the ones already mentioned, my top five are:

    1. 2001

    2. Forbidden Planet

    3. The Day the Earth Stood Still

    4. Alien

    5. Blade Runner(best ever, IMHO)

Some of you guys are confusing horror and fantasy with sci-fi ...

    Among my faves:

    The Matrix (all three)

Serenity (see this if you haven't, based on the Firefly series)

V for Vendetta (excellent futuristic political thriller)

Silent Running (the Bruce Dern classic)

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (best of the bunch)

    Aliens

    Blade Runner

    Terminator (first and second)

    Total Recall

    Predator

War of the Worlds (both the original and the remake with Cruise were good)

I think Aliens for example is a combination of both a sci-fie and horror movie. And so aren't some of the others.

Hated The Mist. Perhaps you're talking about an original of some type? The Star Wars prequels were trash, but the third one is entertaining at the very least. Good to see the bad guys win every once in a while.
