People want to pretend like Dowling will become a shutdown corner, but Cole was ahead of him in the depth chart even before he got injured.

Adrian Wilson will be the starter. Not that I think he's particularly good, but he's better than Tavon and Gregory.

Tavon will be the 3rd safety and no one is pretending Dowling will be a shut down corner.

I don't know how you define shut down, but Dowling could be very good if he stays healthy.

I'm worried that his hip injury has made him way too stiff. I noticed that he was no where as good as he looked against Miami his rookie year when he was playing this year.

Maybe hips take more than a year to recover from? I just hope no lasting damage has been done to his fluidity. Agreed that he can be very good when healthy.

Believe it or not but Dowling had the lowest QB rating against statistic out of our CB's this year, although his sample size was only about 25 total targets in 6 games.

We can't prove too much with such a limited sample size, but I think that he will definitely be in the mix again for one of the backup spots.

I definitely agree. Obviously none of us are going to count on him too much, but he will surely be in the rotation for TC reps and a spot on the roster.

I'm not so sure of that, Tony. Dowling appeared in 6 games this year and was playing snaps in those games, unlike Marquice Cole. Cole was not only behind Dowling on the depth chart, but he was also behind the unknown rookie Dennard, who was hurt and all accounts pointed to him possibly not even making the team as a 7th rd pick.

There wasn't any instance where Cole was ahead of Dowling, let alone Dennard.

I guess you have it right and Reiss and others have it wrong. They think that we need a corner, mostly since we can't count on Dowling.

At this point, anything that Dowling brings the team is gravy. He will be lucky to be on the roster in September.

My prediction is that Francis will outperform Chandler Jones.

Francis DID look good when he was in. Outperforming Jones? Hmmmmmmm

One can only hope Jones continues to improve in his sophomore season and Francis out performs him !! What a dilemma to have along the DL

I think that ship has sailed. If he gets hurt in preseason he's gone. If not, he'll be a decent fill-in.

Any chance he starts the year on the PUP? I can't remember what his most recent injury was but what is the downside of placing him on PUP?

He doesn't get to participate in training camp, which he needs in order to compete for a roster spot.

Reiss also had Cunningham as cut and not being able to count on him last offseason. These reporters are marginally more informed than us and just speculate. Dennard was a projected roster cut by Reiss in July.

I'm not sure you can count Kyle Love as an "underachiever". The kid was an UDFA. He's played pretty solid for someone no one wanted enough to draft.

And a starter who only underperformed after suffering a knee injury and was then splitting time with Deaderick.

    Bequette, PUP with imaginary injury.
Dowling, 3rd CB as RCB in nickel packages with Dennard moving to the slot.
Wilson, plays strong safety in passing situation giving way to Adrian Wilson in the base.
Armstead, starting LE in base as we move back to the 4-3 under/over we ran in 2011, moves inside to 3tech in sub packages.
Love, backup to Wilfork at NT.
Washington, kick returner and occasional change of pace RB.
Wilson, splits time with Tavon SS in base moves to hybrid LB in sub packages.
Ballard, 3rd TE 25-30 catches, 250-400 yards, 3-5 touchdowns and good run blocker.
Gregory, cut based on Ebner developing into an adquate 3rd SS and Dowling capable of backing up McCourty at FS.
Pryor, PUP and activated if we need a DT at midseason.

Vega and Benard will both contribute with 4-5 sacks each as we move to a 1-5-5 chaotic front on passing downs with Benard, Vega, Hightower, and Ninkovich all standing and Jones playing DT. Get at EM..

"Before Dowling got injured" would go back to October of 2011, as the injury that limited Dowling in camp, preseason, and into the regular season was recovery from his hip surgery.
