Expect a big move cap-wise

Tavon Wilson, Branch, and Blount are in this game. As is Logan Ryan. Can't be a great sign.

Blount is in because he starts suspension on Saturday and will be away from the team till 9/14

Alan Branch could be on his way out the door.

What happen to all of our cap space? Does this mean we roll over next to nothing?

I could see the Bears Looking at Tavon Wilson. As well as the Giants, but I wouldn't trade to them since we face them this year.

I think that Logan Ryan is probably done with the Patriots.. The Saints could use a CB or two..

Where did the cap space go?
1.) Right now, the Patriots are going to start the season with 10 players on IR. The past four seasons they ended the season with an average of 11.5 players on IR.
2.) Because of Blount's suspension Pats are scheduled to pay 54 players for 17 weeks. Once Blount comes back a player will be waived and that player's salary for 16 weeks will come off the books
3.) Because of Chris Jones and Dane Fletcher are on PUP the Pats are scheduled to pay 55 players for 17 weeks. Once they come back their replacements will be waived and the remaining weeks salary will come off the books

Replacing Wilson ($965,166 salary) with Ebner (660K salary) on my 56-man projected roster creates almost 300K in cap space

How much do you "need" more ~ Miguel?

QB - 2 Brady, Garoppolo
RB - 6 Bolden, James White, Gray, Blount, Lewis, Cadet
FB - 0
C - 1 Stork
G - 4 Wendell, Kline, Mason, Jackson
OT - 4 Vollmer, Solder, Cannon, Cameron Fleming
WR - 5 Amendola, Edelman, Lafell, Dobson, Wayne
TE - 4 Rob Gronkowski, Hoomanawanui, Chandler, Williams
DE - 5 Ninkovich, Chandler Jones, Flowers, Grissom, Sheard
DT - 5 Easley, Siliga, Moore, Malcom Brown, Chris Jones
LB - 6 Collins, Hightower, Mayo, Dane Fletcher, Morris, Freeny
CB - 5 Ryan, Butler, Bradley Fletcher, McClain, Tarell Brown
S - 4 McCourty, Harmon, Chung, Richards, Ebner
ST - 1 Slater
P - 1 Allen
K - 1 Gostkowski
LS - 1 Cardona

This roster with 10 players on IR and a 10-man practice squad is about 500K over the cap.

One thing that happened to all the cap space is the sudden growth of the Injured Reserve and PUP list.
The Patriots currently have around $5mm in cap space tied up on IR/PUP.

DL Chris Jones & LB Dane Fletcher on PUP
RB Tyler Gaffney, FB James Develin, WR Brandon Gibson, WR Brian Tyms, TE AJ Derby, TE Jake Bequette, OL Kevin Hughes on IR

Add on the dead money, including $5mm for Revis, $4mm for Mankins, $3mm for Arrington, and then others.

Solder trade is no option. That cannot happen.

It has been surprisingly quiet on the surprise move front... there's always at least one per year, so the fact we haven't heard about one yet leads me to believe a big bomb is coming.

Being loaded at d-line is a good thing. There's definitely better spots to get cap room.

Players the Patriots will have to take a hard look at:

Reggie Wayne - $2.5mm cap hit - does he justify this over Harper? ($450K signing bonus would be dead money - Miguel has a better understanding of the impact of the roster bonus and other fees). Harper over Dobson saves about $500K.

Solder & Vollmer - $7mm each. Huge drop-off, both Cannon and Fleming have looked poor. But that's a huge cap allocation.

Ryan Wendell - $2.4mm - does he justify this over Andrews or Kline? Are the rookies ready to start?

Alan Branch - $2.2mm - Not a lot of big DL depth, and the Pats play a lot of running teams. Maybe they hope to pick up a cheap replacement from waivers?

Bradley Fletcher - $2.3mm - has looked as good as any of the corners.

Patrick Chung ($2mm) vs. Tavon Wilson ($1.3mm) vs. Nate Ebner ($0.7mm) - bit of a savings going with Ebner over Wilson, assuming Chung, Richards, and Harmon are the backups on defense. Cutting Chung offers more savings, if you are comfortable with Richards and Harmon. A lot of three-safety defenses this summer.

Tough choices.
