he just backed Jack Tatum's hit on Stingley saying it was part of the game and people needed to suck it up (paraphrase)...then he said BYUs Jon Beck is a better QB then Brady Quinn. This guy is a freaking tool

Re: ESPNs Hodge is a moron...

I saw this also, and totally agree! He thinks Asante can be traded because we have Vrabel and Thomas who can play some corner. What an idiot! Does he even know different kinds of receivers (slot etc...) and how they are used/covered?

Please! All off season I have had Asante's INT of Peyton in my head...when he trotted into the endzone...I just keep thinking, let's get back to that...They should offer him $10M for this year...I think he was going to get $7M under the current deal, no? They need to work out a 1 year deal and draft a top corner and let him tutor said player....then next year see if they can agree to a deal. Question is Asante willing to do a 1 yr deal or not...

I agree man. You always hate to see a guy go down on a hit that may have or may not have been legal but especially in a meaningless game. This whole situation was just completely unfortunate and it sadens me that a football player lost his life playing the game (essentially.)

As for the Quinn statement, wow, what a tool. Quinn is everything an NFL coach wants IMO. I just pray he is a Dolphin.

Asante is prolly as good as gone...

Are we talking about Merril the meathead????

If so, he is almost as savvy as Michael Irvin is.

Re: ESPNs Hodge is a moron...

I may be alone in this, but I'd just as soon get 2 first rounders at this point. Let Asante "get paid" Samuel join the ever growing list of "former Patriots" that go elsewhere only to underwhelm thier new teams. He wants Clements $$$ (which was a joke even for him) and he's not even as good as Clements is. Look at the total picture, not just last year.

I'll take a healthy, happy Gay over a disgruntled Samuel anyday. Our D is predicated by upfront pressure anyway.

As for Stingley/Tatum. Tale of 2 cities. One is one of the classiest, strongest and dignified people you'll ever see, and the other is a low life assassin. nuff said.

It is not so much the hit that bothers me. Yes it was a little after the play and it was ST, so he should not be out there head hunting. What bothers me to no end is he (Tatum) is very proud of the fact that he did what he did to Stingley and to many other players in the league. The fact that even in his later years never appologized for the hit and even tried to make money off it with his book. This guy is just a bad human being and i can't help but wish bad on him. I know that does not make me a very good person, but i hate scum bags and what comes around goes around sooner or later. Sorry for the rant, but i really have strong feeling for the Stingley story as a whole.

As far as the Beck v. Quinn, this is just plain funny. I really like Beck as a QB. He has great size and arm strength, but for Hodge to sit there, with a straight face, and say Beck from BYU is a better prospect than Quinn is just stupid. I am a huge Notre Dame fan, so i might be bias, but come on...Quinn is one of the best to come out of college in a long time, plus he has a head start being coached by Charlie. Quinn is ready for the NFL and whatever team gets him, is going to be estatic. Sorry for the rant

Re: ESPNs Hodge is a moron...

Dickerson had a similar comment. What Hoge, Dickerson and others are forgetting is that Tatum's hit was likely deliberately intended to hurt.

He and Lester Hayes had a contest each game, with points scored for sending people to the bench, for knocking them unconscious, and for knocking them out of the game completely. Supposedly he bragged about it in his books, THEY CALL ME ASSASSIN and a second one similarly titled. I don't know for sure because I didn't read either one, but that's what I was told.

Today that hit that Hoge calls part of the game is illegal and would get a player fined.

A sad part of this is that the Patriots and Stingley had agreed in principle to a new deal, but hadn't yet signed the contract. It was only an exhibition game, so no big deal.

I also read that John Madden visited Stingley in the hospital often and was bothered by what happened, and probably affected his decision to quit coaching so early in his career.

Tatum never apologized, never spoke to Stingley. He did try to set up a meeting between the two of them on TV, but at the last minute Stingley found out that Tatum had just published a second book and was going to use the meeting as a platform to promote the book, and the TV meeting never happened. Stingley said he would welcome a talk with Tatum in private, but Tatum wasn't interested.

Hoge and others are welcome to their opinions. I admit I am biased, but I think Tatum and Hayes were no more than thugs in NFL gear. Dickerson compared Tatum to Rodney Harrison, which I totally disagree with, but again, I admit I'm biased.

Re: ESPNs Hodge is a moron...

I knew he was an idiot a long time ago, along with many of those "experts" that get to be on TV. I remember how last year he critisized the Titans for "ruining" their franchise and "wasting" their first round pick on a guy who "will not be a good QB in the NFL." He had an entire session of breaking down why Young will struggle and how he wont be good. There's a funny youtube video my friend (a loyal Titans fan) had me watch. Check it out.

Re: ESPNs Hodge is a moron...

as a defensive player, you're job is to prevent the football from reaching the other side of the end zone for 6 points, by either playing the ball, or bringing the guy with the ball down so that his knee or elbows touch the ground

THAT is the part of the game......

i dont see the part where you're supposed to hit a player, IN A PRE-SEASON GAME, as hard as you can and try to end his career with that single hit....(while he's still in the air catching the ball)

Re: ESPNs Hodge is a moron...

you train your body so that it can be in the best shape possible for over 20 years

it is not a part of the game, because you are not fined $40,000 for every hit you make on a player....

    as for beck...

i'm sorry, you werent a hyped STAR QB for the.......NOTRE DAME team for 4 years....

its the hype that follows quinn, and the "who the **** is beck" that follows him...and since there isnt ANY pressure for beck to become a superstar in the nfl, it is easier for him to transition and take his time, whether it be 2 yeras to develope or 20.....

hodge knows quinn is a better qb, but jsut from the sole fact that there isnt as much pressure for beck to succeed, he'll have a better time in the nfl

if you can compare it, its like comparing tom brady vs. peyton manning, manning had a lot of hype coming into the nfl....no one knew brady outside of michigan, and his home town in cali....

Re: ESPNs Hodge is a moron...

I also agree, injuries are part of the game no matter how severe! All players know the risk involved.

I know this is your opinion, but I think the physical tools are easy and not even required (look at Montana and Brady) it's the mental part of the game that's most important. That's where the success or failure will be. Quinn will have to prove he has that at the NFL level before I believe one word of the hype. To me, he's the biggest risk for the Dolphins to use their 9th or 6th or whatever pick they may use on Quinn. QB is the hardest position in football and there are far more failures then success stories at that position then any other, for obvious reasons. I'm going to reserve judgment till he actually isn't a liability for the team...if we actually draft him. Odds of Fins drafting Brady Quinn IMO....,not very likely!

You mean the Vince Young that was statistically the worst QB in the NFL? That one? Yea, he's a stud alright.

If he said this, he is part of the ratings game that they all play, stir up a little controversy, do not care at who's personal expense.. just do it baby, it is all about the ratings... he is obviously poorly informed. For those of us who remember this event, it is what it is a cheap hit from a guy who prided himself on being "the assassin."

Re: ESPNs Hodge is a moron...

The guy is entitled to his opinion but saving it for the day Stingley dies is just unnecessary. Anyone who finds themselves rushing to defend Tatum on a day Stingley should be celebrated needs to reexamine who they are (or in this situation where they work).

Thank you. I am amazed at the way Vince has already been accepted as a great QB who has passed the test. He may end up being good but he wasn't a good QB last year.

Don't tell this to someone in San Diego, though. He made the pro bowl.

Also remember last year he said Kellen Clemens was better than Leinart, Young and Cutler and he said the only on of those QBs he would take in the first round would be Young. Guess hes on it again.

Didn't Merill Hodge retire because of multiple concussions ? We shouldn't make fun of the mentally handicapped. In all seriousness, It was a terribly sad day the day Stingley was hurt, and even sadder when he passed away, he was one of the Patriots that made me become a Patriot's fan. I really thought Stingley was going to become a great one, and his injury was such a shame, but he proved the type of person he was AFTER the injury, a truly wonderful person.

As far as Beck vs Quinn, none of us can see into the future, you never know what will happen, though if I needed a QB, I would pick Quinn over Beck. Then again, I would have picked Heath Shuler over Trent Dilfer and thought David Klingler and Andre Ware were going to be great.
