Jets in better Super Bowl shape than Pats - NFL Nation Blog - ESPN (click on link for full article)

"A sampling of accomplished former AFC East players who still follow the game closely raised many recurring sentiments:

    * The Jets at least have pulled even with the Patriots.
    * The Patriots are getting older and have more roster concerns.
    * If quarterback Mark Sanchez can develop, the Jets will be the team to beat for a long time.
    * The Miami Dolphins are on the rise but still trail the Jets and Patriots.
    * The Bills are a mess and don't belong in the conversation until they show significant improvements on the field.

ESPN analyst Herm Edwards, a former Jets and Kansas City Chiefs head coach, already has picked the Jets to represent the AFC in next year's Super Bowl.

"The Patriots are closer to getting back to the Super Bowl, but the better long-term future would be the Jets," said Steve DeOssie, who spent a dozen years in the NFL and hosts a Patriots postgame show on Boston sports radio station WEEI.

"That window of opportunity is closing for the Patriots in two, three maybe four years on the outside. If Sanchez develops, the Jets have a very bright future for the next seven, eight, nine years."

The Pats seem to have a very nice young QB in Brian Hoyer. Hoyer as already shown to have a great amount of poise. Similar to another QB who recently left the Pats Employ..

The Pats have started their transition of getting younger 2 years ago and it continues with this draft upcoming.

I've never heard Herm Edwards say a good thing about the Pats unless there was a backhanded comment in there.

As for DeOssie, he's a great guy, but he seems to have missed some things latley.

The defense has been completely retooled and is VERY VERY young. The offense looks to be up next then what will analyst say?

The Jets OLine is pretty old at 3 spots. Their db's and wr's are extremely mediocre outside of Revis. For all the hype about the Jets defense they were at the bottom 3rd of the league in sacks. Their all world rookie QB tossed 12 TD's and 20 picks last season and somehow the Jets are the team to beat?

I hate these things. This isn't 1985 where you need to draft well in order to be good. If they are OK at drafting, get good coaching & a FO, have cap room and are shrewd and savvy in trading and picking up players, they can go from lousy to very good in 2-3 years.

LOL, they seem to be taking the jump that Sanchez will go from sucky to "all pro, not quite Brady or Manning" this offseason. If so we have competition. Somehow I doubt it's about to happen.

Remember, if the Colts didn't tank their game the jest don't even make the playoffs this year.

and they are limited in who they sign....and they have lost some draftr picks for their moves....and they were the team least hurt by starters missing games last year(or close to least) so that will probably change. I like our chances.

I'd be surprised if Sanchez can get his TD total even with his INT total.

Also I saw the Jets draft picks. With their limitations on signing FA's it could be more then a challenge to gain ANY ground.

I believe they only have a round 1, 2 and round 6 pick. The Jets have been lucky on the injury front minus Leon Washington and Jenkins who they didn't miss, depth is key.

See, I can't agree with that. The Jets were an 8-8 team who lucked out for two games in the post season.

As others have mentioned, the Jets, by reaching the AFCCG, are now severely limited on what they can do in free agency. They can only sign "Street Free Agents" or they have to lose a player before they can sign one to a comparable contract. The Jets showed that they have very little depth and its going to be extremely hard for them to get that depth just on the draft.

That is what Herm and DeOssie missed.

They also over-looked the fact that Brady was coming back from his knee surgery and that he wasn't fully comfortable all year with it.

The Pats are in a much better position than they are being given credit for by either DeOssie or Edwards. And I am surprised at DeOssie's thought process.

***going to post what i posted over at jetsinsider.com ***

There is no question the Jets have pulled closer to the Jets.. But to say they have surpassed the Pats is stretching it.. And seriously the Dolphins?? They have an aging front 7 on defense and no play makers on offense.. The wildcat works on the bottom feeders of the NFL but not the true elite.. And with that, they aren't challenging anyone in the AFC for the SB ticket..

Over the past 5-6 years, we've seen a huge shift from Great Defense and Solid Running game to lets spread the defense out and throw the ball 40-50 times a game..

WIth QB's playing into their late 30's, people shouldn't expect Brady leaving anytime soon..

The rivalary should only get more intense over the next few years.. Jets have drafted very well over the past few years.. Tanny has done a great job of targeting a specific player and going after him.. The Pats take a different approach and draft on believed value and the idea its better to have a deep 53 than just a solid 22..

That being said it appears both teams have a tougher '10 schedule than they had in '09.. Will Sanchez add to his progression in the playoffs or will teams now know how to defend him?? Does Brady come back healthy and produce without a healthy welker??

But the biggest question is, can both teams stay healthy and make a deep run into the playoffs?? Now that's the million dollar question!

I'll take the Pats for these 4 reasons

    1. BB - best coach in football.. No question about it.. very rarely does he get out coached
    2. the Pats ability to sign players (something the jets can't do)
    3. additional draft picks this year and next,
    4. Teams experience in previous playoffs and SB's..

It's too bad that things have been predetermined for the upcoming season. After all, things are always apparent well before rosters are set.

At least we have a Bruins Stanley Cup berth to look forward to, as that was determined last August.

The Jets have already hit their high mark.

How many players are already 30+?

These are the same clowns that told us Maning is the GOAT

    No Jersey Selected

The Jets are going to be in cap Hell in a couple of years and are aging in many of the same spots that the Pats are. On top of that, Mark Sanchez is still their quarterback. The fact that this pick is coming from Herm Edwards already makes me feel better.

No they aren't. In fact it's not even close IMO. Good grief, the jest have no offense at all unless Edwards gets some new hands this off season. "as we stand" I think we're at least 2 games better than they are.

Again as we stand In FEB.... Not sept FEB... This not the time to judge teams.. But if were we are, lets compare...

QB Sanchez vs Brady- No contest Brady
RB- they have 2 good RB, we still cant find one.. edge jets
WR- Moss and a bunch of question marks, that includes welker - The jets have a bunch of avg recievers.. Push
Te Keller vs Baker - Edge Jets
Oline- The jets have a great run blocking o line- The Pats have a good pass blocking line, but still have questions right now... edge the jets

D line- I think if we have Wilfork , we have the edge, with out him its a push...

LB's - The jets by far have David Harris, Bart Scott 2 studs, we have mayo and well no one.. edge jets...

Cb- Derell Revis outweighs any combo we have right now...

Coach- Bill Belichick , Rex Ryan- I will take Belichick nuff said there..

So the way the team has been built right now FEB, the jets have edge in alot of aspects ,but lets ask this question after the draft and FA... There are too many questions right now, and the awnsers wont come until TC..

They've been getting older every year since 2003. The average player age must be in the high forties by now.

If the season started today- oh wait- it doesn't start today. In fact, the real off season has not started today.

I think I'll wait until July before I comment as to who is the best in the AFCE, as ESPN blogger should.
