"According to 2016 Nielsen data ESPN lost over 1.5 million subscribers from February to the end of May this year. That drops ESPN to 89,465,000 subscriber homes, a precipitous decline from the network's total number of 2013 subscribers which was over 99 million. Based on these numbers over the past four months ESPN lost an average of 10,400 subscribers a day. "

Cord-cutting going deep.

ESPN Has Lost 10 Million Subscribers Since 2013

An amazing number - ESPN pays $6 Billion/year to sports leagues before they earn a single dime. That's not even counting their own production costs!!

Those outrageous carriage fees are really coming around to bite them in the ass. The whole "charge whatever carriage fee we think we can get away with it because customers don't really have a choice in buying bundled packages" model is falling apart. Cord-cutting is a valid option now, so cable providers--for the first time in years--have to actually compete on price. And when they're competing on price, dropping a channel with an $8 per month carriage fee that the majority of your customers (according to surveys) don't want for that price... well, it's an attractive option.

Lots of details on why their model is in trouble here: Survey paints gloomy picture for ESPN

If they're not smart, this trend will continue. Their penetration rate keep dropping while their fees for carrying live sports keep going up (because live sports programming is about the most valuable asset there is in the DVR era, and there's more competition for it than ever). And if it comes to the point that they start getting outbid for their premier sports content, say goodbye to ESPN because that's all they've got. Without ESPN and NFL, it's game over for the network.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

That is all...:D

What was their subscribership at their peak?

I hope ESPN can survive long enough to be named by Brady in a defamation lawsuit.

Hopefully, a ruling against them will be their death knell, and appropriate that it would be Brady that delivered the fatal blow

(Presumably subscriber loss is seasonal. That is, I'd bet fewer consumers decide to cut the cord in the fall when football season is going on than decide to cut the cord in the summer when the sports programming options dwindle. But these numbers don't include summer losses yet.)

This makes absolutely no sense. if you live in the teams' local market you'll get all the games Over the air for free.

Does every TV provider in the US have ESPN bundled in the base package?

It all started to go downhill when they cut ties with Gayle Gardner.

Bring her back!

Unfortunately, I highly doubt the business plan the suits will come up with for losing mass amounts of subscribers is going to be: better quality

Be nice to be wrong.

this is hilarious. i pray it continues.

Hate that I have to give them viewership for Euro 2016. But don't really feel like dealing with streams when I can watch it on a 60 inch.
