OK Now I think we officially can discard the in Bill we trust.

VP, GM Head Coach OC DC....whats next Chief of Scouting.

Seems like a train wreck waiting to happen

I would liek to know one other time in NFL history when one man has assumed so many responsibilities for one organization with a good outcome.

On top of that it appears that Adalius Thomas is going to bad mouth the Patriots to all other potential Free Agents. This can not help.

To those of you with rose colored glasses..I would like to see the positive spin on this.

-As for as AD and the effect on Free Agents, there are enough voices who sing/have sung the praises of the Patriots to drown out AD. Even Shawn Springs has been complimentary of the team recently. Oh yea, playing with Tom Brady and an organization with such prestige and stability helps too. It may not be the slam dunk "Best Destination in the NFL" it was a few years ago, but the Pats are still an attractive landing spot if the dollars are competitive.

-Bill is not an Emperor. He is not the offensive coordinator. Did he have to do more with the offense this year than he did in 07 and 08 with McDaniels? sure. But I doubt it was anymore than he did in McDaniels' first year as OC in 05.

-I'm looking forward to BB as the DC. It's what he made his name as. I think Pees brought a stale defense, and I am anxious to see what BB does. I do think he has enough help. Patricia, Corwin Brown, and Pepper bring a diverse and seemingly talented set of voices and leadership and have been well-schooled in Belichick U.

-He is not the not czar of scouting. Does he have final say? YES. But he did when Pioli was here too. People in and around the organization speak very, very highly of Nick Caserio and as he becomes more experienced and comfortable in his role as the chief of the personnel/scouting department he will become a very valuable asset, if he isn't already (Last year's draft may be our best since '03). He also still has Floyd Reese as an adviser, a very experiened GM who helped build many of the competitive Oilers/Titans teams of the late 90s/Early 2000s.

-I know ppl are upset about this last season and one of our chief rivals is playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday, but calm down. We are lucky to have BB but with all the turnover on the staff over the last few years, there needs to be patience to allow seemingly capable and intelligent guys like Caserio, O'Brien, and Patricia to develop. It worked for McDaniels, Dimitrioff, Pioli, and dare may I say Mangini. They have no better teacher than BB.

The coordinator position is so overrated in most cases. It is understandable why that is because there are some coaches who turn one side of the ball over to the coordinator, ignore it and spend all their time on the other side (ie Spurrier having nothing to do with D, Dungy having nothing to do with O) But that is rare, and certainly not the way the Patriots are set up.
The real role of the coordinator in our type of system is to be the 'top position coach'. Our coordinators are always position coaches, and in addition to that, they coordinate practice and are ASSIGNED THE DUTIES of being the one to manage game plan development and play calling.
We never have, and never will have a coordinator who develops game plans or calls play that conflict with BBs philosophy. Coordinators here CARRY OUT philosophy they do not determine philosophy.
The only impact of not having a coordinator is that the position coaches work as a group instead of having an assinged leader, which means the duties a coordinator would typically have in addition to his position coaching are shared among the others.
It seems that BB has always hesitated to fill openings by naming a coordinator, and the logic is very likely that a coach will best handle the promotion if the additional duties are transfered to him step by step while the remaining assistants HELP HIM with the workload of transitioning to a more difficult set of duties.
I dont understand why anyone would have a problem with this, other than those would want BB to bring in an outsider and cede the philosophical approach of the team to him. Considering that BB has more successful in his first 10 years as HC of NEP than maybe any other HC in NFL history in their first 10, I think I'll ignore the opinions that suggest we hire someone to decide philosophy and scheme while BB apparently hides in the closet.

Here's all I need to know: BB did something that he thinks puts the Patriots in the best position to win.

If there is no clearcut person who SHOULD have the OC/DC position, why should BB force it on somebody? Why not leave it out in the open for everyone to try for. The man for the job will separate himself eventually.

You think the guy who won 3 superbowls is wrong because he doesn't do you what you think he should do? How many teams have you coached to superbowl victories.

    2000-2009

You think Romeo had total control of the defense? BB has always been in charge, as most head coaches are. Did you hear what he had to say? TITLES are meaningless. It isn't that there aren't people doing the job. They don't have the title.

Yeah, I figure Adalius mouthing off in February will cost us about 5 wins next November and December

You don't need rose colored glasses. You just have to clean the poop off your crap-colored glasses. Or get your head out of your butt so your glasses don't make the entire world look like doo doo.

    Disable Jersey

That should have been discarded long ago

The title is only relevant when dealing with outsiders. What matters is the role on the team. BB has worked as a second D.C. ever since he came to NE as the head coach.

Outside of the draft, how do you think it will get any worse than last year?

You don't know what responsibilities BB is taking upon himself, and you certainly don't know how that differs from last season. Shawn Springs interview on 98.5 today is something you should probably listen to, even if it's just to hear him talk about BB's level of involvement this year.

This is true. Seymour and Samuel will also be players that won't help the recruiting cause.

Why would you need any sort of spin on it at all right now? Who's calling plays and how much does that change from last year? Will O'Brien have more freedom on the offense to help counter any extra time BB needs to devote to the defense? Will the front office be better able to lighten BB's GM type load? All of this is unknown to this point, so it's premature to hit the panic button.

Shouldn't you wait for a season where the Pats don't continue their near decade long streak of double digit wins and them getting their sixth division title in seven years. Yes, this year was a disapointment, not a disaster.

Belichick was HC and GM from day one. He will not be the OC or the DC. There are people who will have those responsibilities without the title. Belichick will probably not take on that much more responsibilities than when Weis and Crennel were here.

All Belichick is doing is promoting from within without giving out an official title. Similiar to what a lot of teams do although they dole out the title.

Do you know if the has been anyone in the league history who took on so many responsibilities and had a bad outcome either?

Seriously?!? Everyone knows the disaster that the Raiders are and they still get free agents to sign with them. You really think that a disgruntled player that many around the league look at as an idiot and even more so after his interview with Felger and Mazz is going to sway free agents from coming here? I personally think Thomas looks worse after that interview than Belichick.

So without seeing how it will work out, you have already deemed it a failure. I guess I have rose colored glasses because I am willing to wait and see and trust Belichick enough to think he has a plan.

Why is it so hard for people to realize that O'Brien will once again be the OC, just without the title? BB paying attention to the defense is nothing new.

I like that BB is working closer with the D but I agree that we need A) an OC and B) Front office help.
