I keep on hearing from the right that illegal immigrants dominate emergency rooms. Is their any data to back up that claim?

Is their data that shows uninsured American citizens using those same emergency rooms?

I would say in general the poor dominate the ER, and most people just assume every mexican looking person coming through the ER is an immigrant.

Last time I was in an emergency room was 15 years ago when my friend broke his collarbone......in the Bronx. Didn't see many illegals that day, but I guess I was wrong

There SHOULD be "0" illegal immigrants in our emergency rooms. Maybe you don't see them in the Bronx, but try going to hospitals in southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, etc.

Illegals shouldn't be in our schools either...so start another thread on that one.

I don't now if there is data based on immigration status. In general, those on Medicaid use emergency rooms much more often than the general (paying) population.

It's estimated that 12 million of them have snuck in since your last vist to the ER, the ER personal should treat them, patch them up, notify the Police, the Police should then ship them off to whence they came, we have our own family's to support why should the Tax Paying American Citizens pay the medical bills of Illegal Alien Criminals.

I don't know how anyone would be able to tell how many illegal immigrants use the ER because it's not a question they get asked or have to answer. Any number given would have to be a very rough estimate.

That being said there are these figures available and people ought to be able to infer something if that's what they so desire to do:

Among the uninsured, 7.4 percent made two or more visits to an E.R., but so did 5.1 percent of people with private insurance. Medicaid recipients were the heaviest users of E.R.’s, with 15.3 percent of them making two or more visits during the year.

More than 25 percent of non-Hispanic blacks visited an E.R., compared with 20 percent of whites and about 18 percent of Hispanics

This is a lack of healthcare problem not an illegal problem. Right?

    BTW: "Obamacare" is terrible :(

It all depends on if you mind seeing illegal aliens stacked up and dying in the parking lot of the ER or not.

Low income people and the uninsured dominate emergency rooms ... it's been that way for a long time ... this is not news.

I agree, for many ER's are the Doctor's Office of the poor, particularly on weekends.. most doctors wo work in ER's accept the reality that they have to treat everyone who comes in the door, and there is that Hill Burton Act.. so they do not turn people away..

Life is precious for everyone, not just naturalized citizens..

I think I found your answer:

The JAMA study also found that patients with public insurance, such as Medicaid and Medicare, are more likely to crowd into emergency rooms for minor complaints than are the uninsured. Only about 17 percent of E.R. visits in the United States in the last year studied were by uninsured patients, about the same as their share of the population.

That isn’t the only way people with subsidized insurance add more burdens to the system than people with no insurance at all. A 2007 study in the Annals of Emergency Medicine looked at charges and payments for 43,128 emergency department visits between 1996 and 2004. “What surprised us was that uninsured patients actually pay a higher proportion of their emergency department charges than Medicaid does,” reported co-author Reneé Hsia, a specialist in emergency medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. “In fact, 35 percent of charges for uninsured visits were paid in 2004, compared with 33 percent for Medicaid visits.”
