Being a 7th round pick generally means there's not exactly high expectations, although once in a while a player surprises you. Julian Edelman is certainly a player who qualifies.

    Ian:

If I remember what Doug Martin said correctly, the Patriots actually learned about Edelman when he was talking to former Kent State HC, and now former Pats DC Dean Pees. . . .

Also, according to Martin, drafting Edelman was no spur-of-the-moment deal; the Patriots apparently sent three or four different people to meet with Edelman.

I made a quick edit. I think the amazing thing was the fact that no one else thought much of him, yet compared to all the other 7th round picks he was one of the most productive from that class. Quite a few of those guys never even saw the field last year.

    Ian,

Thanks for another good read. It's always fun to read the "behind the scenes" stuff.

He was about 12th overall among rookies yards and catches, though I don't remember the exact number.

OTOH he was top ten in the league in catch %age among players with 50+ attempts.

Thanks ct - I'm at work so I wouldn't have been able to look that up until later on

On a different note, I have a spreadsheet with info on every guy taken in the 7th that I put together when researching this article. I'll post that later on if I have a few minutes and things quiet down here.

I think he will be even more dangerous than Welker in the open field. Nobody is quicker and shiftier than Welker when it comes to 5-15 yards, but I think Edelman will be more dangerous once it comes to the open field. He's faster and bigger, but maybe not as shifty.

I think it was Reiss that mentioned a nfl scout saying this year would be the test for Edelman, can he hold up to all those hits as the season goes on? He has the talent and brains to be good, if he has the longevity he is definitely more talented than David Givens, for instance, who was pretty good with us.
