Didn't they experiment a little with him as their third down back?

I'd be worried about durability but used conservatively wouldn't he be a good option?

My only problem with it is it removes the threat of the run. With Faulk, you had to guard against the draw, a swing pattern, or account that he might stay in to block.

With Edelman, it's unclear whether he can run anywhere near an effective draw, and I haven't seen enough to say he can pick up the blitz well either (for that matter, haven't seen that he CAN'T, there just isn't any evidence).

A third down back is valuable because of the deception in various situations. Edelman doesn't provide that really.

He's got the ball skills to be a 3rd down back but the ability to block and durability are in question. I wouldn't mind seeing him back there. Last game he lined up in the backfield at least once or twice. I think Mr. Woodhead is our guy though.

BB already stated the new back they picked up (Moorehead) did it in NY and they plan to use him in that role..

Edelman is so elusive, I bet you he could run a great draw.

He's got some of the skills for sure, and we all know he's able to learn a new position based on his previous switch. I just think an effective draw is more about patience and vision than it is about physical tools (though those certainly play a part). He may have it, he may not, but I would rather play a guy like Morris or the new guy, who at least have experience in that position.

We have Morris and now Woodhead as potential third down packs.

Edelman would be destroyed. It is not a matter of whether he can run a draw. It is a matter of blocking and facing the big guys coming at him every play.

Would never work! Brown is only a WR, can't do anything else ;)

This is dumb. Why not suggest that Edelman play OLB? he'd be as likely to succeed as he would as a running abck.

But perhaps you guys just want Edelman out for the season.

Its not that crazy. Edelman isn't some little girl out on the field. Faulk was listed as 5' 8" and 202. Reggie Bush is 6' and 203. Edelman is 5' 10" and 198. Seems about the right size for a 3rd down back.

Of course knowing how to pickup blockers is another issue. I just don't understand people saying he'd get killed in the backfield.

    Chris Johnson 5'11, 200 lbs
    Julian Edelman 6'0, 198 lbs
    Jahvid Best 5'10, 199 lbs

He really isn't much difference in size than other finesse RBs in the NFL. I would rather him stick at WR where he has been excelling but what does any of this have to do with CB or OLB? That is ridiculous.

I proposed this earlier, but upon reflection, here's what I don't like about the idea:

Edelman lacks the build to block AND he has very little experience blocking. If he doesn't get the carry he has to go out for the pass.

I think the key there is we know that they practiced Troy pretty heavy at CB during TC and really had a good idea what he could do when the injury occured.

I think it would be important to know exactly what Edelman was doing when they tryed him in the backfield during TC. My guess is it was more of a gimmick than them actually trying him out as a third down back.

An example I used in another thread was the wildcat just because they practice throwing out of the wildcat with Ronnie Brown doesn't mean he is practicing as a backup QB. If Edelman in the backfield was a gimmick then he likely never even learned or practiced a single play that pertains to 3rd down back. I would certainly leave the possibility that they felt Edelmans body type might work for the 3rd down back role the same as they felt Troys slots skills would mirror to defense but BB never came out and said what the plan was with putting Edelman in the backfield so we have no clue whether this is a ligit possibility or not. IMO the simplest explanation was it was a gimmick so I wouldnt expect to see Edelman as a 3rd down back.

I agree. Edelman is in his 2nd year learning how to be a wide receiver.

There is no reason to now try to have him learn to be a running back, or a corner, or an OLB.

BB begs to differ. granted most of it was passing out of the backfield
