Always go for the wins. I would much rather have a playoff berth than a top 5-10 pick. With the rookie salaries, top 10 picks are way overrated. Unless you get a HOFer or at least a perinial All Pro in the top 5 when you factor in their contract, they are a bust. Those players come into the league as one of the top paid players at their position before playing a single down.
The Pats have been pretty successful selecting players in the middle to late part of the first round (Wilfork and Mankins for example). I don't see why they would want to draft in the top 5. Personally, I think being near the top in rounds 2-7 is more of a bonus for being a really bad team than having a top 10 pick in the first round.
