Interesting article from a conservative site.

If I had a choice of a casino or offshore drilling for R.I. I would choose the drilling all day long...Gambling is a non-producing enterprise that sucks $$$ instead of creating it.

Drill away. I think technology in this field has come a long way and it can now be done in an environmentaly friendly manner. But more importantly, we need to ween ourselves off the stuff on the long term. I'm not sure why it's such a complicated concept for some to grasp that there is a finite amount of oil on the planet.

Good thought...drilling in new places cannot be the #1 priority. I remember back in the 70's...the gas lines. Uncle Sam came up with all kinds of tax incentives for things like solar power on your roof...seems like we have gotten nowhere since then.

Every drilling proposal offshore or toher wise has been fillibustered in the Senate, and of couse the administration has been excoriated about not being sensitive to the enviroment and so on.

You've hit on the most important problem of our energy policy. Congress needs to take the lead on protecting an environment that favors researching alternative and possibly permanent sources of energy. The problem we have now is a culture in government that not only doesn't foster this philosophy, but actively discourages it through subsidies to oil companies and allowint those companies to devour new technology enterprises as they become more viable in order to protect their hold on the energy generation.

Oil may still be the most viable source of energy short term, but it has to be phased out. More nuclear plants need to be built foe a number of reasons. The present leaders in government either don't understand it or don't care about the future of their country. If I had a bet, I'd say the latter is true.

Robert (Coo Coo) Kennedy Jr & Al (Boob) Gore have said that drilling off shore will disturb "Jellyfish Eggs".

    Liberals hate oil.

I'm only for allowing more drilling as part of a more comprehensive energy solution that includes investments and legislation that supports alternative energy. Without that, the oil companies will continue to do what they can to block developments in this area.

As far as the specific proposal above, it sounds interesting, but I wonder if other states (such as land-locked ones) should have a claim to oil fields beyond a certain distance.

I think we all want that too but drilling is better than nothing.

In order of good to me :

    Alternative energy 100% solution.
Alternative energy progress and new drilling.
Alternative energy progress with no new drilling.
    New drilling only
    Status quo.

I'd go along with that, but I'd switch the two middle ones...splitting hairs.
