Draft Possiblities Rounds 1-3

Here's my first attempt at what I think the Pats should/could do in the first 3 rounds:

Round 1. Bobby Carpenter OLB Ohio St. 6'3' 255 4.58 no explaination needed here

Round 2. Martin Nance WR Miami(OH) 6'5" 210 4.50 - big possession receiver, good hands, excellent red zone threat - the replacement for Givens

Round 3a. Jonathan Joseph CB South Carolina 5'11" 187 4.35 - Great measurables, reliable tackler who will support the run, looks very natural in coverage, raw but potentially huge upside - his draft stock could soar taking him out of round 3.

Round 3b. Roman Harper S Alabama 6-1, 200 4.60 - Smart, great instincts, like having another coach on the field - has played both free and strong safety, potentially lacks "upside"

I like these picks. If Ryans is avaiable at 21, where we drafted Carpenter, I'd take him, though. Especially if we are going to draft another Alabama guy later on. Carpenter I see more of a Vrabel/McGinest/Colvin type pass rusher, which I feel like we have set already (with Colvin and Vrabel taking over the OLB spots). That being said, if we keep Vrabel at ILB, then I like us drafting Carpenter. I think LB in round one is the way to go, I'm just not to sure which type of LB we need (which obviously the personnel people do).

As I've posted earlier. Not sure on Carpenter. No intincts. Follows cues fed to him from Schegel.

Nance. BB prefers quick WR not the long strider types. I think this guy would struggle like Bethel another long strider does.

Joseph. I'm not sure he runs a 4.35, maybe down a steep hill on a fast track. BB likes experience. This guy is lacking on it. He didn;t make a lot of big plays this year, which is also a must for BB.

Harper. Not the greatest in coverage and had Roach and Ryans in front of him. But he could project into our system. If we waited a round, we could get Page from UCLA. (If Page runs well enough.)

Smart (AF Academy transfer), strong, right size for a 4-3 ILB, 4 wrestling letters in HS, admirer of **** Butkus, loves football.

Sounds like a Ted Johnson type who will benefit from a 4-3 scheme to protect his speed limitations. Possible second day candidate like Claridge, if he or Claridge freed Vrabel to play outside again it would be nice to stretch Vrabes' playing career as long as possible.

My wishlist for now:

1. Rodrique Wright - DT/DE - At 6'5 320 he is extremely athletic for a DT his size, has the power to take on double teams and the quickness to be a very effective pass rusher, fits perfectly in both the 4-3 and 3-4 schemes, could have been the top DT taken last year but decided not to declare


2. Thomas Howard/Manny Lawson - OLB

2. Howard - Has great size and speed, one of the fastest LBs in the draft. Great agility and acceleration, and can read and react to plays well. Good in coverage, as he was a defensive back prior to being converted to an OLB.

2a. Lawson - ATHLETIC, has seen time at both DE and OLB, amazing speed, reportedly runs a sub 4.5, very quick off the ball, great pass rusher, sack artist, good size, long reach.


3a. Mike Bell - RB - Has good speed, and possesses great muscle mass for his size. Very determined player who is ready to blossom into his potential.

3. Cedric Griffin - S/CB - Versatile defensive back who can play cornerback or safety. He's a hitter so he can stay in the game in pass or run situations. Good size.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats take Lawson at #21. It might look like a reach now, but I'll bet his stock soars by draft time. 6'5" 245 4.58...last time we saw those numbers they went by the name Demarcus Ware.

greg jennings would be a nice pick in the 3rd or 4th round to complement the nance pick

I think he or Chad Greenway would be a good bet with the first pick. Greenway:

He may end up going sooner, although some mocks have him falling to us.

I'd be happy with him, but I think another LB (ILB preferably) would be more important, or a young RB. Depends on who's available.
I think Joseph Addai (HB, LSU) looks appealing there, or possibly round 3 if he falls. http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/rb/josephaddai.html
decent size and great speed, great hands, can break tackles, etc.. Faulk and Dillon are getting up in years, and I think Givens will be re-signed.

Could also look at OT in round 2 to replace Ashworth, although I think Kaczur will likely move over there once Light is back.

I don't see CB as a big need, with Gay, Samuel, and Hobbs all looking good. Right now I'm thinking the first three picks could go with two LBs and an RB. It's a great year for LBs, and a decent year for RBs.

Schlegel

A little short for ILB for the Pats. He looked to have decent instincts to me. Decent blitzer. He does alright with shedding blocks, but in the 4-3 he didn't have the mamouth OGs to shed. Coverage looked OK but needs help.
Bottom line: Nothing spectacular, but nothing really bad. He could be a 4th rounder or a 7th rounder.
If he can play ST really well, he could make a roster.
