Why Is Hollywood Sitting Out Gulf Oil Spill Relief?

AOL News (May 25) -- In January, when a magnitude-7.0 earthquake killed an estimated 230,000 Haitians and left more than a million others homeless, Hollywood shed a collective, well-choreographed tear, then banded together like a Christopher Guest cast to help put the country back together. The tabloids kept track of the most generous celebrities, noting that Brangelina and Sandra Bullock each donated $1 million, while others, like Sean Penn, decamped to Haiti to work directly on refugee efforts. In perhaps the most visible celebrity relief effort, George Clooney hosted a star-studded telethon that featured performances by Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and, obviously, Bono.

Yet as hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil continue to leak into and spread out across the Gulf of Mexico each day, Hollywood has seemed largely unmoved by the BP oil spill, which is creating its own long list of need: Eleven workers died in the accident that led to the leak, and scientists have so far tallied an animal fatality count of 23 birds, 156 sea turtles and 12 dolphins, numbers that are expected to rise (countless more will simply sink to the ocean floor, undiscovered). Thousands of fishermen are abruptly out of work, and it may take decades for the gulf ecosystem to recover. All in all, most experts say the damage here will eclipse that of 1989's catastrophic Exxon Valdez spill, which dumped 11 million gallons into Alaska's Prince William Sound and cost the company nearly $4 billion.

There is a difference between a natural disaster and a man made disaster. It's hard to care passionately over a man made disaster when all you really want to do it scream at those who did it.

The only thing you can do in a natural disaster is rush to help those effected.

Again, every 15 - 20 years we have a major man made catastrophe, and nothing changes...

So nothing will change after this, and in 15-20 years we will have the poisoning of the great lakes, and then nothing will change, and life goes on.

If this oil spill had happened when Bush was in those phony Movie Stars would have been all over it, they would have been having "live sex" on MSNBC

So, Harry, tell me again, I've forgotten.

When is Sarah Palin making that appearance in Louisiana? You know the one - the one where she comes to share her expertise on drill baby drill and donates her $100,000.00 speaker's fee to the clean up efforts.

She's busy, she figures "Dreamboat Obama" will take care of everything, thats probably why Looney Clooney isn't down there either.

Sarah's building a fence around her house some guy is writing a book about her and he moved in right next door to her so he can look into the Palins bedrooms........:D

This is a difficult concept for some, but over 3K people died in NY... it was also done by political terrorists... the gulf was done by a corporate terrorist.

Not to minimize what is happening in the Gulf, but it is like comparing raisins and grapefruit..

If you know anything about NOLA they have more than their share of high powered musicians... in about every bar in NOLA there is a recognizable name.. there is more talent there than just about anywhere...

BTW where are the Keith Urbans, and the rest of the country folks.. or is this topic germaine to the left coast..

ROFLMAO Maybe he just wants to look out his back window into Russia.

What's really funny about this whole thing is the fact that Sarah wrote on her Facebook page we’re sure to have a doozey to look forward to with this treasure he’s penning. Wonder what kind of material he’ll gather while overlooking Piper’s bedroom, my little garden, and the family’s swimming hole? which is just precious considering that her "family's swimming hole" is Lake Lucille - a 362 acre lake which is totally rimmed by houses (except for the part which is open for camping) - only one of which belongs to Sarah. If Joe McGinnis is renting a house next door to Sarah - Lake Lucille is his "family swimming hole," too, since access to the lake comes with the property.

No, I'm one of "those people" who believe, based on her interview with Charlie Gibson, that she thinks she has a great grasp of international politics and policies simply because Alaska and Russia are in close proximity to one another....close enough that you can see Russia from certain vantage points in Alaska.

PALIN: And, Charlie, you’re in Alaska. We have that very narrow maritime border between the United States, and the 49th state, Alaska, and Russia. They are our next door neighbors. We need to have a good relationship with them. They’re very, very important to us and they are our next door neighbor.

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.

GIBSON: What insight does that give you into what they’re doing in Georgia?

PALIN: Well, I’m giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relation with all of these countries, especially Russia.

    Palin Russia War Quotes

I wonder - if it's her perspective of "how small our world is" and "how important it is to work with our allies to keep good relations with all of these countries" - most especially our "neighboring" countries, how she feels about Mexico.

Oh wait - she's already given her opinion on our neighbors from Mexico.

"It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

Life is funny, stranger the fiction they say. I'm not sure what's worse, Palin claims or Obama not knowing how many states there are. Pretty pathic if you ask me.
