Don't jail burglars judges are urged: It's a 'less serious' offence, say law chief's advisers

Burglars should no longer be sentenced to jail, official advisers have said.

Unpaid work or a curfew would normally be a better way of punishing break-ins and thefts, said a panel that issues guidelines to judges.

The report - part of a consultation document on criminal sentencing - is likely to heighten concerns that Britain's courts are not punishing offenders harshly enough to deter others.

It also says victims of crime could be allowed a say in the way criminals are punished - but only if they call for leniency rather than harsh sentencing. But, crucially, only messages of forgiveness would be taken into consideration. The views of those who demanded the harshest penalties would be disregarded.

Well why should people be punished for wrongdoing and breaking the law?

    #24 Jersey

The Brits sounds like they're more f*cked up today than we are; and that's a strong statement.

You should, since the far left is looking at them as role models.

They are? You think the "far left" wishes to keep burglars from going to jail? Who are you talking to? I know some who you might consider "far left" who would never agree with that. Just wondering where you get that idea from.

What country do you live in dude? We just had a 5-4 ruling on the 2nd amendment. We just had another ruling that determined death to be too cruel a punishment for animals that savagely rape children under the age of 10. Yeah, I'd say we're treaded more toward English lunacy with each passing day.

Listen you middle of the road....:D just kidding RW!

Deciding whether to put someone to DEATH and possibly make a mistake can't be compared to being lenient on burgulars.

did you know that over 1,000 convicted murderers have been found innocent over the last 20 years? As a society...and as advanced as we view ourselves, we can not afford to execute ONE innocent man or woman. You really can't debate that point intellegently, can you RW?
