Goldsmith: In DoJ Hiring Interview, I Was Asked ‘Are You A Republican?

In his new book, The Terror Presidency, former Office of Legal Council chief Jack Goldsmith claims “he was quizzed about his political loyalties during his initial job interview” with the Department of Justice. According to Goldsmith, the first question asked in his interview with David Leitch, a deputy to then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, was about his political loyalties:

Goldsmith also said in his book that — like many other Justice Department hires — he was quizzed about his political loyalties during his initial job interview. One of Gonzales’s deputies, David Leitch, opened the conversation by asking him about an $800 campaign contribution Goldsmith had given to a law school dean who was a Democrat. “Why have you never given money to a Republican?” Leitch asked, according to the book. “Are you a Republican?“

Discrimination in hiring based on political affiliation is forbidden under both federal law and internal Justice Department rules. Goldsmith is not the first official, however, to reveal the politicization of the hiring

Wow, I can't believe it! Next thing you know we're going to find out Supreme Court justices are aligned with the party of the president who appoints them! OMG! :p

You have to be KIDDING!!!!!!!! RIGHT

Presidential appointments are given to people from the same party as the President, WOW thanks none of us never knew that!

I guess that's why Clinton appointed Janet Reno, and not someone who wouldn't actually killed 80 civilians.

Presidential appointments, are by their very nature, political.

Give enough money, and you will be named an ambassador!!

    Here's his resume from:
Jack Goldsmith joined the Bush administration in 2002, working first in the general counsel's office at the Pentagon and then serving as assistant attorney general in the Office of Legal Counsel. In the summer of 2004, Mr. Goldsmith left the Justice Department to join AEI as a visiting scholar and to teach at Harvard Law School. At AEI, Mr. Goldsmith works on international law, sovereignty, and intelligence reform.

So he "joined the Bush adminstration" and they actually had the gall to ask him if he was a Republican?

Here's his resignation announcement from the DOJ:

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Attorney General John Ashcroft today announced the resignation of Jack L. Goldsmith III, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel. Goldsmith’s resignation is effective July 30, 2004; he intends to return to academia.

“I have been proud to serve this Nation in the critical work in which you and your Administration are engaged,” Goldsmith wrote in his formal resignation letter to President George W. Bush. Goldsmith reiterated that sentiment in his letter to Attorney General Ashcroft, writing, “Thank you for the opportunity to take part in that critical work.”

“Jack Goldsmith brought a brilliant legal mind, unwavering focus, and great loyalty to the job of providing me and the Department wise counsel,” said Ashcroft. “His contributions to the Department have served us - and the American people - well. I thank him for his service, and wish him well as he returns to private life.”

Prior to being nominated to his current post by President Bush in April 2003, Mr. Goldsmith served as Special Counsel to the General Counsel of the Department of Defense. At the time of his nomination, he had accepted a position at the University of Virginia Law School, and had been on leave from the University of Chicago Law School. He earned his first bachelor's degree from Washington & Lee University and a second bachelor's degree from Oxford University. Mr. Goldsmith received his master's degree also from Oxford University and his J.D. from Yale Law School. He went on to earn his Diploma in Private International Law from The Hague Academy of International Law.

despite your hyperventilation, i don't owe jacksht... never did...

while his particular position was a political appointment, unfortunately from top to bottom at the DoJ, dozens of other hirings WEREN'T... regardless of what administration we're talking about, or what position in the DoJ we're talking about, politicization of our justice system is reprehensible... it is especially so by this frightening, born-again bunch of Rapture-awaiting criminals...

Monica Goodling sure seems to believe her hiring practices were illegal...

Pressed by Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), Goodling conceded that her actions were “illegal.”

and by the way.... we all truly must stand in awe of the textbook hypocrisy that occurs when a Con man turns "bleeding heart" when the topic of Waco, Texas, ever comes up ... utterly hysterical: ...

    newsflash: they killed themselves...
