Tell me if my eyes are deceiving me but I thought on the few plays that Vollmer replaced Light, he looked a LOT better against the pass rush and speed rushers. He did a good job of keeping guys off Brady. Light may have more experience but I think that Vollmer has him beat in terms of athleticism, length, and protecting the QB on passing downs. I think the only reason he didn't play more is cos he's a rookie. But he looked better than Light in limited reps. Now someone go ahead say that I'm wrong. LOL.

PS I'm talking specifically about the Buffalo game. I remember Light being pulled at once point and Vollmer inserted in his place.

i don't remember Vollmer being in there for more than a series when Light screwed up at the beginning of the game. But i was only looking at him to replace light at Left Tackle. If he was anywhere else on the line i missed it.

Yup it was at LT. He looked good there. Didn't make any mistakes that I remember and he stuffed the passrusher he was matched up against.

Not a large enough sample to make any definitive judgments.

Physically, Vollmer is the best lineman on the team. He is going to look generally better on easy mental assignments than most other players. In a head to head comparison with Light, Vollmer wins on frame, wingspan, kickslide, acceleration, power, and footwork. Light wins on experience, balance, and hand technique. He is going to need to develop his hand techniques and balance a bit before he beats out Light, but that is a question of when not if.

I'm certain he's going to be, but how could we tell? He's had six snaps!

First, this is the first thread I have ever followed up on with Light as the topic. I just posted a thread on him a couple days ago and most of these issues were covered. Vollmer DID look good on the ONE pass attempt he was in for....but they had little Maybin against him, who looked JV in size comparison. Light had a bad game, bad enough for ME to notice, lol. What I noticed too is how badly he did on the right side of the line. He wont be switching over there EVER, so its sink of swim at LT. The fact that Vollmer made it on the field that many snaps in his first game as a rookie says the coaches have to like what they see in practice. If you watch his plays again, there was only 1 running play to his side so there is no way to guage the sample. My bet he will be the star of this year's draft class.

Balance and hand technique don't mean much if you can't keep the defender away. Light is slow. I have been watching Vollmer quite a bit in preseason and the first game. He looks good. And he has the psycho attitude most real good OT's need to thrive.

about this specifically, bill spoke on it; something about Light being 'eligible' for a play meant he couldn't immediately go back to the line?

I think that Vollmer will eventually be taking over for Light, but not for at least a yr or 2.

Light is still an experienced pro bowl LT in my opinion, and no matter how good he is he'll still be made to look bad a couple/few times a game. Because he's mostly taking on elite defenders etc, it's just the nature of the position.

Even though Vollmer shows great upside, i wouldn't want him replacing Light just yet.

My friend came up with a good one: "The Berlin Wall," references his size, heritage, and ability to intimidate.

I would not be surprised to see Vollmer replace Light sooner rather than later. We;ve seen already that Belichick will cut a player, taking say a 25% decline in player quality if it means a 75% decrease in salary. As soon as Belichick thinks Vollmer can come close to replacing what Light contributes to that line, Light is gone...unless he can thrive at another spot.

I think Light is injured ... he's not huge and he's always had some problem with the speed rushers but his balance has always been great. His balance looked off on Monday night. I expect him to rebound vs the Jets or when he's 100%. Vollmer is way better off for Bill to bring him along slowly. On the other hand if Light were to get injured for any length of time I doubt he wins his job back ... Vollmer is a beast.

Vollmer replaces light at LT in 2011 one Light's contract is up. He could possibly push him for a starting job next year. He provides a quality swing tackle, and once LeVoir comes back the best OT backup tandem we've had. He may do better than Light in some situations right now, and he's more than ready to step in and start if Light gets injured. But no, he's not ready to push Light out of the starting lineup yet.

Vollmer is giving me Logan Mankins flashbacks. When he was drafted, I said, "Who the heck is that?" and now I'm saying, "Wow, great pick."

I predict it won't be long, probably this year, where Light moves to RG and Vollmer takes over LT. Or Light to RT, Kaczur to RG and Vollmer to LT.

Or any combination that results in Vollmer at LT. :D

I sincerely doubt if Light will ever move from LT again after that last game. His effort from the RT spot pulling left was FEEBLE as I posted earlier. He doesnt work well in a crowd(tripping penalty). He played both inside and outside Kaczur and literally stopped playing with TB still with the ball while working on a double team with Kaczur. Maybe something was wrong with him but with the money he makes and us drafting a couple new guards for next year he will do well to make the team in '10. But what do I know...
