Why do people pull out the fines from other sports? It is completely irrelevant. Belichick was fined the maximum possible - they could not fine him $10 million dollars!

"a league that would love to let millions of football-adoring fans concentrate on the games but can't because too much smut is in the air."

That's because the media loves to write about it - over and over and over. It an easy story for lazy writers that don't seem to want to work for their stories and do any research.

It must be contagious. Here's a Clayton gem:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&page=1stand10/07week2

New England's Sunday night meeting against the Chargers is one of the more important games of the season, and, believe it or not, it's more important for the Patriots. A loss to the Chargers could come back to haunt New England because it could mean the difference between playing a playoff game in Foxboro, Mass. or San Diego.

Umm, John, are you sure that doesn't woprk both ways? That a loss to the Patriots could mean the difference between playing a playoff game in Foxboro, Mass. or San Diego for the Chargers.

Not saying this is not an important game for the tie-breaker. It sure is, more important than last week's Jets game, IMO, but ... to say that it is more important to the Patriots because a loss could cost them the tie-breaker?

Clayton is not big on logic.

It's not that it works both ways. Its much worse for the Chargers if they lose. Thant means - irregardless of who's got the better record - the Patriots have proved that we can win at their place, while they weren't able to win in ours.

The Pats would be far less affected by SD in January (they won there last year) than the Bolts would by a snowy game in Foxboro in January. More important for SD to get home field.

The Chargers would do fine in a cold weather game with their team built on the running game and defense. A passing team like the Pats are going to be much more affected by snow.

Please enlighten us. When was the last game that Tom Brady lost in the snow?

pats are also a good running team. except for the fact the chargers never play in snow, in fact never practice in weather colder that 60 degrees. cold game: advantage patriots

I do have to say, that as a fan of sports, journalism, and writing in general, this entire episode has convinced me that sports writers are not very smart. They're sanctimonious, over-sensitive, and don't generally report anything other than opinion. There was a huge opportunity in all this for someone to do some serious investigative journalism and write a good piece, and everybody dropped the ball, across the board. They all seemed quite content to write opinionated columns, but not one of them did a serious expose on how prevelant this is in the league, what it really means in a game, and what the politics around the episode was. Whether that piece was ultimately critical of Belichick or not, it's embarassing that this kind of junk is the best that the sports world can muster. Truly.

For a columnist like Mariotti to suggest that "offensive" signals were taped is either A) unethical and disingenous, or B) supremely lazy and uninformed. Either way, it's yellow journalism. It's a little sad that there aren't better writers following the NFL.

I know the 80's Bolts were a passing team but watch a Dan Fouts interview some time when he talks about the playoff game in Cincy where they got smoked because they weren't used to the cold.

To paraphrase "We lost that game when we got off the field and realized how cold it was."

The 2002 Snow Bowl(Raiders vs Patriots) playoff game was in many inches of snow was mostly a passing game. I was at that game. The snow actually made it easier to pass. I was also at the 2003 Colts and Titans playoff games in Foxboro. In both games, in the Titans game it was only 2 degree's, the passing game wasn't affected. Well, except Manning kept throwing Ty Law passes-:)
