Does Cheney know bombing Iran will backfire? Bush doesn’t say:

At a farewell reception at Blair House for the retiring chief of protocol, Don Ensenat, who was President Bush’s Yale roommate, the president shook hands with Washington Life Magazine’s Soroush Shehabi. A grandson of one of the late Shah’s ministers, Soroush said, “Mr. President, I simply want to say one U.S. bomb on Iran and the regime will remain in power for another 20 or 30 years and 70 million Iranians will become radicalized.”

    “I know,” President Bush answered.

“But does Vice President Cheney know?” asked Soroush.

The president chuckled and walked away.

I don't know how we could support a military effort in Iran even if we wanted to, we are spread too thin right now.

Ahmadinejad doesn't have a lot of popular support in Iran, Iran has one of the youngest overall populations, and there is a decided pro-Western attitude among the younger generation.

There has to be a better way to deal with Iran than bombing them. Supporting the Iranian opposition groups would be a much better method.

Bingo! the situation is Iran is fundamentally different (sorry for the pun) As you point out the population is very young demographically and doesn't like the mullahs who control the country. Supporting internal opposition groups there is the way to go. Which is what is likely happening.

The U.S. must NOT use any force against the state of Iran. None. It would be a total disaster, a victory only for the forces that love violence.

And we need to begin or seriously ramp up collaborations with other nations, through the U.N. or some other international forum, to find a way to end the violence in Iraq (and Israel/Palestine, and Afghanistan). Enough of the "fortress America" mentality.

War is NOT the answer to the differences between peoples. Not anymore. Certainly not today.

If something happens with Iran, we won't be involved, at least not directly. We'll let Israel do our dirty work for us IMO.

No consolation. Much of the world is already negative toward Israel, more sympathetic toward the Palestinian cause. To allow Israel to attack would be just as bad, and would bring even more hostility toward both Israel and the U.S.

No, we need to find another way. We need to get European and other nations involved in this. The only way to get the violence to end is to dry up its energy source, and right now that energy is being fed from many directions. Need to nullify that negative energy and turn it into positive.

Jack Bauer would make the difference, on a serious note I agree.. to attack Iran will only polarize us further from the rest of the world and bankrupt this nation

it's interesting to see some of the staunchest Iraq excuse makers here capitulate that Iran would be formiddable... unfortunately, their heroes do seem to be making curious maneuvers in the Gulf region that do not indicate exhausting all diplomatic avenues...

two aircraft carrier groups in the area is ominous enough; perhaps Cheney is hoping for an "accident" to happen....

The muslims of the Middle East see no distinction between the state of Israel and the United States. Anything the Israelis do might as well be done by the US. President Cheney would do well to keep his dog at bay, you can be sure of that.

PC, you are confusing "excuse making" for tempering the rush to scape-goating. Enough errors of judgment were made for everyone to have share -- we all do have a share in this. Let he who has not sinned throw the first stone....

In the meantime let's all get on the horn to let the administration, congresspeople, and so forth know that going into Iran is absolutely NOT going to help, that it would only make things worse.

This is a most serious problem that affects all of us as Americans, regardless of stripe or party or anything else.

no, "we all" don't have a share in this... i was, as were a huge number of Americans, profoundly against the rape of Iraq as soon as grumblings began about it by Laurie Mylroie and Paul Wolfowicz and others within weeks of 9/11...

I'm sorry, PC, but like it or not, we all *do* have to share in the mistakes of our nation. If you were to go to Indonesia or Malaysia or Iran or Pakistan, they will not care if you are carrying a picture of Bush with pins stuck in it, they will identify you as an "American" (assuming you have a U.S. passport). Despite your pleadings otherwise, you will pretty much be treated the same as any other American. We are all in this together, whomever our president may be.

This country is controlled by the Israeli lobby. We are going into Iran no matter what.

That's a dumb thing to say. We have two parties here who fight about everything, but they're both completely controlled by Israel? We're certainly very much in Israel's corner, but we're not controlled by them. Israel needs us more than we need them and both sides know it.

I keep saying that we aren't going to attack Iran. We couldn't if we wanted to. Is it possible? Of course, anything is possible. Is it likely? I seriously don't think so. This is all a shirade to gain some leverage at the negotiating table. GW has shown he's nuts enough to do anything. The more people talk about an attack, the more likely it seems in the eyes of the most. When you see us detaining iranians in Iraq, and making a case of their involvement in killing American GI's, it's like a pre-flop raise in poker. We're trying to show some strength in our hand. Even today, Amenijhad gave a speech where he talked tough, and then tossed in some lines about being willing to negotiate. When you put things together, you see a smash against Iranian influence in Iraq (surge versus Sadr), a case against iranian involvement, threats of attack, and recently imposed sanctions. All these lead me to believe we'll see some form of dialogue in the coming months.

totally agree. Israel wanted to attack last week, but we are the ones who make sure they don't. If Israel attacked IRan, there would be a massive all out war in the greater ME. If you think Iraq is bad, such a war would pale in comparrison.
